Is this going to work?

By flyboymb, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I procrastinated in getting a squad list ready for a tourney at my new FGS. Not sure who is coming or what is being brought so I put together some of the ships that I was most comfortable flying and got this.

Soontir Fel — TIE Interceptor 27

Push the Limit 3

Autothrusters 2

Ship Total: 32

The Inquisitor — TIE Advanced Prototype 25

Wingman 2

Autothrusters 2

TIE/v1 1

Ship Total: 30

"Echo" — TIE Phantom 30

Veteran Instincts 1

Fire-Control System 2

Intelligence Agent 1

Advanced Cloaking Device 4

Ship Total: 38

I'm hoping that the large base dice amounts along with high evades will allow me to punish ships from range 3 or dart in for extra firepower. The Inquisitor will act as a stress reliever for PTL Fel or to assist Echo if somebody tries to stresshog her (assuming I can keep him in range 1).

A bit of remorse hit in soon afterwards with me suddenly wishing I had put together 3-4 ADV with tracers and ATC, but do you think this list will work at the tournament level if played well?

Triple Aces can work, but it is fragile. I'm not huge on Echo in general because the first Cheerios or Han you run into will make you want to punch a baby, but it looks fine otherwise.

If played well, you can do well, but there are some limitations of going "all in" on a list like this, I played a similar list in Wave 7 for a while. The bane was PS 10+ guys like Boba Fett or Poe + VI, since they could handle being focus fired somewhat easily and kill me pretty quick.

On the up side, many people have gravitated away from those ships, so you might be okay.

The inquisitor isn't going to be doing actions repositioning too much because he only has one action, and Wingman is only range 1, so you will be telegraphing Soontir and Echo's movement if you want to actually use Wingman. Also, if you just want to clear stress, Epsilon Leader is another option, but doesn't have the same damage output or mitigation.

Sadly, I'm not sure wingman will work too well. The inquisitor has a great ability and action economy with the title, so if it was going to work I would say he is one of the best candidates, but sadly, I think you will be overly relying on Echo and Whisper to carry the day. Echo can be hard to pin down, but her ps8 isn't nearly as scary as Whisper's PS9. Soontir usually wants to run around on his own anyway, so trying to be his wingman just doesn't work all that well.

Yeah, Soontir is only being constrained if you keep him close to another ship. These are arc-dodgers. They need SPAAAAACE. Keep them spread out to force your opponent to choose to go after one, then the other ttwo can easily get behind to maximize their firepower while the one being focussed on runs away like a monty python knight of the round table...

Give the inquisitor push the limit so he can kick ass and take names

i would put stealth device on soontir to add better survivability

So I took off WM and AT from the Inquisitor and added PTL and TIE MK II. The extra greens will give some extra options when taking the stress off the following turn. To get SD on Soontir, I'd have to get rid of FCS, which I'd rather not do as I want to make those 4-5 dice count for as much as possible.

I could drop intel agent and slap some tracers on the Inquisitor, but knowing where my opponent is going to move is a huge part of knowing when and if you should decloak.

I'm putting a lot on having AT go off and getting Echo to cloak before a number of attacks go off I realize, but arc dodging is how I've tailored my playstyle.

I watched a game last night on Vassal, and the end game was full health inquisitor vs almost full Dash. Inquisitor had autothrusters, but because he only had speed 1 banks and turns to clear the stress, he was never able to close the distance to Dash and kept getting hit by perfect to hit rolls. Unlucky, yes, but not unexpected. Autothrusters, focus, and evade still weren't enough to dodge, and slowly the inquisitor was worn down. Usually I would say "Drop autothrusters for TIE mk2, that's crazy!" but giving the inquisitor 4 more green moves is nothing to sneeze at. Not being shot at all is a much better defense than turning one blank into an evade.

I'm curious to hear about how PtL inquisitor works with those shiny new engines. Think you can get a report up?

Sure thing!
