The Spoilerrific Super Duper Rogue One Megathread!

By Desslok, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I haven't seen anything in the previews or trailers to make me think that Felicity Jones did a bad job or is a poor actor.

I think FJ did a lot better performance than Daisy. I watched TFA the night before going to see Rogue One, and I have to say Rey came across a bit... Kirsten Stewart to be honest. I'm hoping that it was due to the director (Natalie Portman was a lot better actor when not being directed by Lucas for instance), but as it currently stands I'd be more keen to see Felicity Jones in future films than Daisy.

I'm pretty sure that was the director for TFA making his presence felt. JJ Abrams is a hack.

And this is what going to the movie 3 days late gets me? By the time I get to delve into the discussion here it's moved to a debate on the ethics of digital actors? :)

BTW, the plot and acting are garbage

I shouldn't have come here. I might have breezed by some poor acting scenes with little notice amongst the rest of the awesomeness of the film until perhaps my 3rd viewing. Now my low will power may have me sitting there during the first viewing and perhaps being whisked back to reality with, "oh, there's what he was talking about....oh and there again". Dammit!

Didn't have a problem with any bad acting. Apparently my standards are lower?

Also I thought Vader's castle was badassed. Mind you, why would you set up your home on Mustafar? That seems weird, living where you 'died'.

My first thought it was a mentally unstable Vader punishing himself; facing the place he was defeated by Obi-wan and born new. Or perhaps it was a statement - I'm so over my old self I can plop down my home base atop the ruins of my old self.

The bad part about absorbing a lot of information about the movie since seeing it Thursday night is that it's easy to sometimes forget where some of it came from.

For example...I can't remember if it was fan speculation, Wookipedia, a Lucasfilm source, or Sam Witwer on the Order 66 podcast again (or a mix of the above) who stated that Palpatine built the place for him, and that it overlooks the spot where Obi-Wan defeated him. Which fits Uncle Palpy perfectly: "I'm building you this great fortress. But it overlooks the spot of your greatest defeat. Don't screw up like that again."

How the alliance should have assaulted the shield gate:

Upon reflection, there's a couple of ways to think of it - Vader beating himself up over his defeat, The Emperor being a jerk and rubbing Vader's face in his greatest defeat or Vader going "Yeah, look who has the last laugh! Who needs that Anakin punk!"

Or it's because Lava Planets are cool. If I was going to build a Fortress of Solitude, a Lava Planet is where I would go.

IMO, this is Vader using the site of Obi-wan's 'betrayal' and Padme's 'death' to fuel his rage and anger. Essentially, I see it as him using this area as a dark side battery if you will.

Perhaps it was intentional. Now that Vader has lost a good portion of his physical being, the force is less prevalent in him (you know, all those midichlorians ran away with this limbs, lol). So in order to compensate he needs to bask in anger and hatred, fully embracing the dark side, building his power again.

I'd say it's deliberate on the part of Palpatine.

What finally turned Anakin fully into Vader was the all-consuming loss and pain and outrage and failure that came from Kenobi's "betrayal" and Padme's death. What better way to make sure there are no cracks in that transformation than to make Vader go back to where it happened any time he wants to "get some time off".

Actually, basking in the Dark Side Glow makes sense, as he was in the bacta tank when we first see him. Top off your dark side battery while getting your oil changed? Seems a reasonable interpretation to me.

Anyone gotten the novelization yet? Are there more details to be learned in the text version of the scene?

A Bacta tank filled w/ both Bacta and midchlorians?

No novelization for me yet.

But here are some tidbits of information--

Playing minecraft with my daughter would make me way to paranoid to go outside in Lava Planet.

I like the "Star Wars is an RPG answer for why Vader's palace is on Mustafar:

Ewan: "You can't win Anakin, I have the high ground!"

Hayden: Ok, I want to do a double backflip off this thing onto the bank, landing behind Obi-Wan and stab him through the chest all dramatic kill/betrayal style!

George: You sure?... that's a ridiculous difficulty and you're both down to like one or two wounds.

Hayden: Yes. This will be an epic end for this campaign. Even it it doesn't work it's still an awesome idea, probably the best one I've had.

George: Ok.....

*roll roll*

George: Wow, that's terrible.

Hayden: I regret nothing. If my character survives he will build his palace here as a memorial to what an awesome move that would have been had it succeeded.

George: Ewan you can get an attack in now if you want.

Ewan: Told you. *roll roll* Look at that roll! Not only do I hit, your arms and legs are gone, and you're on fire. I win!

----some time later----

George: The camera cuts to the director's shuttle landing at a dark foreboding palace on Mustafaar. As the palace door opens, the dark form of Darth Vader emerges.

Hayden: HA! See! Told you my palace would be here. Still say that as an awesome idea!

Ewan: And I still say you're an idiot.

I think it makes sense that Vader would build his palace there, as a "This was the place of my rebirth" kind of symbol, the death of his old self etc. It wouldn't fit for me to think the Emperor made him set up there, while he may be his Master the Emperor can't really force (hehe pun) him to stay there, he would just stay on his Star Destroyer "being busy".

Yep, that's what I'm thinking too. Ep VIII should prove one way or another.

The building on the magmic world reminded me of an early concept for RotJ's.

Anyway, wow. Rogue One captured the Edge of the Empire feel as well as A New Hope, and with the extended screen time on Jedha, more deeply in many cases. On the Age of Rebellion side, I was able to connect to randoms in cockpits for their sub-10-second appearances again. (The Force Awakens hit me as by the numbers, and I'd wondered if the "flight wing" device was spent. But it's still got life!)

I was impressed.

Alternatively, to borrow a line from another poster in another place: "This is the place I last held my wife. This is the place I last knew my best friend."

So, without spoilers, I'm just going to say that Rogue One was disappointing.

However, this is based on some personal pet peeves in films that I have, and I won't pretend it's an objective failure of filmcraft.

Another little incongruity that I'd forgotten about until one of my players brought it up last night...

At the beginning of A New Hope, Leia and the crew of the Tantive IV are all firmly sticking to a story that they were on a diplomatic mission to Alderaan. This is now a little ridiculous given that the ship was quite clearly witnessed fleeing from the battle over Scarif.

This was one of the points that Sam Witwer and the O66 crew discussed on their Rogue One episode.

They compared it to a person getting pulled over for speeding or driving under the influence and denying that they weren't but knowing full well that they were.

Essentially, it was a bold-faced lie and they both knew it, but Leia had no choice. She didn't fight real hard with Vader et al after she was caught.

It's also worth noting that the movie doesn't specifically state that the Tantive IV jumps straight to Tatooine from Scarif. They could just as easily have led Vader on a merry chase through several other systems, switching transponder codes and whatnot along the way.

That and it might have been a fairly safe diplomatic ploy in the past; simply claiming that you are a very important diplomat might have got a lot of people to back away in the past.

None of the Imperial Senators in the Rebel Alliance council mentioned being freshly out of a job in Rogue One, so presumably sometime between Rogue One and A New Hope is when the Emperor dissolves the Senate. Thus, when she leaves Scarif, Leia has certain powers and privileges; but by the time Vader catches her, they are gone.

The Senate is dissolved during ANH.
