The Spoilerrific Super Duper Rogue One Megathread!

Oh yah....pretty sure there's martial artists in Star Wars now.....

Star Wars is planet of hats with 70s stereotypes, so it's hardly surprising that Asian character = martial artist rears it's head.

But if they'd made the "blind martial artist" a white dude, they'd have been accused of "cultural appropriation" and "lack of diversity".

To be fair though, if you are trying to find an extremely skilled martial artist, who is also a good actor in this day and age, that does limit your pool of actors significantly more. To be honest, the Asian culture has a more ingrained tradition of martial arts movies. They have entire sub genres of them, compared to Western cinema. Yeah we have our action/fighting movies, but not to the level as in the Asian cultures. So, if a criteria for your movie is "An actor who is equally skilled at acting and fighting" and you are not willing to settle for "eh, as long as he's good at one of them, we'll muddle through him being **** at the other" it would make sense to go for someone with the career of Donnie Yen. A leading actor in a series of films, that were well received by most people, AND also really freaking good at martial arts? Why wouldn't you go for that guy?

And while I can't say I am an expert on action flicks, I'm hard pressed to think of another actor, of any non-white ethnicity that is equally skilled at acting, and some form of martial arts. Hell I can't think of any white actors either that are both. I can think of people who can fit one or the other, but not both. So yeah, not sure who they would really go with outside of the Asian action genre anyway, considering the character concept itself.

Also -- martial arts strikes, once again proving that Stormtrooper armor is useless against named characters' attacks.

Bah! And you call yourself a Kung Fu Ferret! I can think of a long laundry list of actors and martial artists who are good at both (or all three, if you require a Mighty Whitey in the Kung Fu roll).

(And no, my list doesn't begin and end with Jackie Chan, Yuen Biao, Samo Hung, Chow Yun Fat, and Jet Li)

Hey I was checking, is this the thread about the new cool Star Wars movie?

Nope :P ! This is the thread about diversity in casting as it relates to modern cinema!

I could understand how you might get them confused, though...

Do I get college credits for writing my Star Wars/American demographics politics thesis here?

Can I start bitching about Ghostbusters '16 in here?

Hmm...okay, you get credit, but you still have to take all the required courses again, anyway. Because that makes sense, right :P !

EDIT: No, Desslok, you may not. Some things are just going too far...

Absolutely, but if we are going "Infinite Backpacks" with this thread I suggest everyone put on their crash helmets and buckle up, cuz I'm gonna have fun.....

I help where I can....

I want the siren from the first Rogue One trailer as an alarm on my phone. Anybody have any suggestions?

There's 3 minutes of it, there has got to be some kind of make a ringtone/alarm software out there.

I need to convert that to a .mp3 or .wmv file. Time to get my live-in tech support to earn his keep.

What large ship is that around 20 seconds? Is it new or something from EU? Looks somewhat familiar, but it's only a glimpse. The tower reminds me of Clone Wars era Separatist ships.

1) Get this set up on your work computer with Repeat enabled.

2) Wait until Friday the 16th at 5 PM and turn up your computer speakers to full volume.

3) Hit play right before you run out the door for the weekend.

...and get these Go Rogue! instructions to go viral throughout the next week.

Disney's marketing department should hire me.

I dunno about the EU but it looks new. It's shown in the one on the last page with the x-wings flying over it and rolling to the right as they do.
