Anyone notice the AT-AT head redesign? Seem to recall the ESB concept art looked like that.

The 'melee vs ranged' discussion cracks me up a little. There is a reason the one has replaced the other as the preferred personal defense tool for most. I appreciated the posts that acknowledge having both skillsets is best, but the idea of a guy with a stick taking on armed, trained, armored troops is... silly. Can you imagine a group of marines guarding a checkpoint allowing someone to get remotely that close without eating a mag or two?

But this is star wars so eh.

Back in my WEG D6 days I would often include characters from 'primitive' planets with 'firearms'. Was fun when the Jedi players learned its awful hard to block or TK a large number accurate projectiles. Think your all powerful? The enemy also learns to identify, adapt, and overcome.

As to the trailer... I thought Jan Ors?!?! Dark Troopers?!?! Deathstar Plans?!?! When I watched it.

Just watched the trailer again for the umpteenth time & had a thought:

Are we sure that Forest Whitaker's character is a good guy? It looks like he's wearing a cape in the shot in the trailer. Anyone else think he might be an Inquisitor & also hooded figure in the room with the royal guards?

You're assuming all of that because he has a cape?

Not assuming, just speculating. Plus, it's no more off the wall than saying guy in black cape = Vader.

It matches the Rebels AT-ATs I read earlier in this topic.

I need to find a source, but his character name is released as well as the fact he's a bounty hunter.

"Forest Whitaker's role was previously shrouded in secrecy, but according to Making Star Wars, he'll play a 'one-legged bounty hunter affiliate'.

He will reportedly be a veteran of numerous battles with a "robot leg" and use a cane to walk."

Seeing as they posted this before the trailer, I think they have some good insider info.

Coolness. I hadn't heard this tidbit of info. Thanks!

On the fighting styles thing, I'm surprised nobody has mentioned John Wick. Literally using a handgun as a melee weapon

As for melee vs. fire arms:

A knife has an attack radius of 18 feet. Pole arm, vibro spear thing, even further. If you are not at risk of snipers or firepower, ie: you are guarding the exit of an elevator or something similar, melee makes a lot of sense.

If you are outside, or open room, then melee is pretty silly.

While the myth busters experiment is kinda cool to watch, and certainly a good starting point for researching the topic, there are so many holes in their methodology that you really can't draw any definitive conclusions from just that.

Which, along with the fact that they are silent, why certain melee weapons are preferable to fire arms to those in spec ops operating in close quarters like say... if you are attempting to infiltrate an enemy stronghold to steal plans of some sort.

Yeah, but I doubt any weapon in the Star Wars universe is silent. Even knives and clubs probably have to make some electronic sound and light up.

The level of skill required to use a knife to "silently" kill someone at close quarters is ridiculously high.

And being dangerous is not the same thing as being effective. Just because you've stabbed someone doesn't mean you've killed them (unlike in the movies, where one stab is enough to kill).

(Of course, just because you've shot someone doesn't mean you've stopped them, either.)

But at least it doesnt have blaster sounds echoing through the halls.

The use of melee weapons can be ceremonial - think of the Pope, protected by his brightly colored Swiss Guard (Emperor Palpatine is, in many ways, an evil space Pope).

Very good point, but see this:

Although many would think the Vatican is protected by a token force of spear-slinging cosplayers, this is not the case. Although the Vatican does not like to discuss it, many plain-clothed officers are nearby the Pope when he is moving about. This especially includes when he travels abroad. These Swiss Guard officers pack the best weaponry available, namely tricked-out Heckler & Koch MP7 personal defense weapon (PDW) that fires armor piercing small caliber rifle rounds. This weapon is extremely popular with elite units ranging from SEAL Team Six to presidential protection units around the globe. It is also compact enough to be packed in an underarm-sling that can be concealed underneath a sport coat.

I am aware that the Swiss Guard use guns.

It wasn't an example of melee over guns but an example of a situation where someone carries a melee weapon while conducting guard duty, even if the melee weapon is completely obsolete. I would really not be surprised if the Swiss Guards dressed in their fancy dress uniforms and carrying halberds didn't have SiG-Sauer pistols underneath them (much as Palpatine's Royal Guard are alleged to carry heavy blaster pistols under their robes).

It has been said that a handgun is basically a knife that you can stab someone with at 25 yards (or even further, with skill).

Yeah, blood-curdling death screams are so much better.

A single blaster shot rings out and someone might think, "Hey, that dickhead guarding the elevator just had a negligent discharge," and investigate, but do so slowly. They hear someone screaming through blood bubbling out their lungs and through their mouth and nose, they'll be significantly quicker and much more serious about it.

On an imperial base? no, that's just the interrogation section. You want to check it out? be my guest.

I would imagine that the interrogation rooms are sound-proofed. No sense disturbing the meditation of a Sith Lord.

;)

Those using them would be highly skilled spec ops soldiers, those who know to kill quickly and quietly. Not a bunch of yahoos running through the halls with vibroblades yelling as they randomly stab people.

How is a vibroblade superior to a suppressed slug thrower for quiet killing?

I rather hope that scene does play out pretty much like Raiders. Bo staff guy takes out the mook Storm Troopers then Vader steps out and beheads him with his Lightsaber.

Apparently we have members of the forums who are so knowledgeable with knife fighting to the death and how spec operatives work and such that the only conclusion is they have done the deed.

I can't wait for Rouge One. I'm assuming since we got the TFA core set around the same time the movie came out, can we expect Rogue One X-wing expansions/material around Rogue Ones release?

I mean, there are some prior and current service members here.

But yes, we can expect those things for sure.
