Ironically, as an Australian Ex-Servicement, Living in Canada... Entering the United States is not something I can easily do - doubly so on a Holiday...
I love the ideas, but would bronzing it not just yield a piece of flat bronze? Might need to do a little creative etching first...
Yes, it would....but it would be much funnier that way! ![]()

What day is the Phoenix tournament? I have family in Mesa....might be time to "visit" them ![]()
i will be hitting 2 regionals in may.
My thought is to most likely save the Bye for the 2nd one to see how i do in the first one. Both are just short of 3 hour drives, potentially solo, which means i just need to up the irons in the car on the way there.
I feel like the second regional maybe softer due to location so I may have a better chance at a 9-1 10-0 the first round which obviously is better than a bye.... The first regional may have more people and better players but the more people also means potentially devastating win first round.
Later rounds don't really even out either.
A lot of your competitive and successful players realize that armada is a game that rewards high risk high reward plays. ive ended events with 20 Mov after going 10-0 1-9 9-1... that second game, my gamble failed and i got tabled. the other games my gamble paid off and i tabled my opponents.
I have seen good players and high seated players at top table get obliterated due to either a misplay or a high risk high reward situation not going there way (big dice attack gamble, and they get skunked with no rerolls) it happens.
A good friend of my mine, my main opponent, usually goes 2-1 3-0 at events and his MOV is in the late teens because his games are always 5-5 6-4, he doesnt take big risks in life in general and despite being undefeated, someone can 10-0 9-1 and then 3-7 will place higher than him. its just how armada works.
If your only going to one regional take the free 8-2, walk around the tables, see what people are running for ships and start making some strategies to beat the archetypes. watch the people tabling their opponents as you will likely face them.
If its a 3 round regional, definitely use it and just try to crush your next 2 games. 5 rounder, the bye may not have a huge impact
I've kind of been assuming I would not use a bye (if I even had one), but it really makes sense to me to use the bye and then just play a casual game. There's probably someone else with a bye to play against - best of both worlds.
What to do, what to do. I've been thinking about this too. I won all three of my matches at my SC but game in second due to MoV. The winner declined to go to RC so I get the bye but...I still dunno. On one hand I am no longer worried about tournament fatigue. I learned in my first tournament that my games usually go the distance which equals no breaks so I brought a big drink and a bag of trail mix to my store championship. Helped greatly. But I agree that often my biggest wins are in round 1 so the bye may actually hinder me. And I like winning swag. BUT you know, I don't get to play with other folks nearly enough and I really enjoy tournaments so...I'm probably going to throw down. Amassing stuff isn't as fun as playing. We'll see how big the field is in LA and I'll decide there.

It is on Saturday 5/28 I believe. It's at Imperial Outpost. Hope you can make it down,
I have one SC win, but will be attending two RCs. I'll probably spend my bye on the first one (I assume they won't give me my bye back after the fact), and use it to scout out what the other players are bringing and how they are playing their builds.
As the first one of these will be closer to home, this may not be to my strategic advantage. I already know the sorts of builds and play-styles that are common in my neighborhood, and so the scouting is less likely to be illuminating than if I saved it for the more distant event, where there will be more people whom I don't know. But, that will make that event more interesting, I imagine.
Still, it's certainly a trade-off.
Making my best attempt not to hijack the Intentional Draw thread by starting my own about this topic I'm struggling with. I'm heading down to Kansas City this weekend for my closest Regional (why Nebraska got nothing is still upsetting... but that isn't going to change this year). I've got a bye from a SC win... but I'm not sure I want to use it.
Don't get me wrong, I want to win this tournament! That being said, I want to play Armada a lot more than that. Do I go down, use the bye (losing a chance to play someone I've never met [which is half the fun]), and potentially get paired against a player I've played several times who also has one? I only get to play twice, and I might end up playing people from my neck of the woods for those games anyway?
If I'm being honest, I really only care about placing top 8, because I want some of those sweet, sweet dice. Taking the 8-2 bye puts me in a very good place to go for that, but the more I consider, the more I think it's not worth it. Yeah, in X-Wing, where you play 5+ rounds, why not? I don't think I'm going to skip 33% of my tournament...
Final thought (and not that this actually has any bearing on the tournament standings): The Regional just so happens to be taking place on my 30th birthday. I'm spending a milestone of my life driving 3 hours to play a game I love, seems like such a waste to end up just sitting around waiting, points be damned... The competitor in me really WANTS to use the bye, I earned it. ...but the rest of me wants to roll some dice, so I think that's what I'm going to do.
I would say use the BYE, walk around and watch all the other matches and players, get an idea of what they are running and how
, that's an advantage of the BYE as well.
I'm a bit torn as well. On the one hand, an 8-2 is solid, especially with 10-0 so hard to achieve now. It also gives you a potentially easier matchup in round 2 (although you also risk playing a fellow store champion with a bye).
However, it puts you at a slight MoV disadvantage. Plus, you go to a tournament to play games, not sit around. I think I'll wait to see how my the tournament numbers turn out. If there is an odd number, I'll bite the bullet and take the bye. If not, I think I'll play the round.

if you are going to the tournament to play games use it and play a casual warm up.
if you go to regionals to win, use it and scout the competition.
Using a bye guarantees you to play another store champion if there are an even number of those present as the score the bye gives you is impossible to get without winning a store championship (or being the odd player). My reason is more that I don't want to play the same dudes I usually play. I'd rather play someone new.

Truthiness,
Are you attending the Phoenix Regional? I was under the impression you are in Southern Arizona for some reason by reading your blog.

As of about three weeks ago you would have been correct. The beauty of Army life. I'm finishing up a move to Fort Meade, Maryland. Once I'm settled, I'll be going to a regional out in West Virginia.

Well dang. I was hoping to get a chance to meet you and hopefully play against you in the Regional. Hope you have a good move to Maryland!
Does anyone know if the bye is worth more than normal? I know in Xwing they have things called superbyes....and the tomb software at my last tournament was giving 9-1s for the bye...which they had to override the software.

Armada does not have super byes. They are 8 tournament points with a Margin of Victory of 129.
This was apparently not the case. At the Ohio regional, the bye was worth 9.

I hope its a super bye!
I did go through all the effort to EARN that bye i dont want to end up losing to a guy because i went 10-0/9-1 and he goes 9-1/9-1/9-1 and beats me on mov thanks to the bye...

That is definitely not correct by the rules (even for Store Championships, Regionals, etc.) and FFG has confirmed this. The TO must have changed it.
Edited by OverdawgYes at the Ohio regionals Tome gave everyone with a Store Champ bye a 9-1.
A couple more thoughts for everyone based on my experience in Ohio.
1. If you have more than 24 players the tournament will be 4+ rounds not 3 with a cut to top 2.
2. Each player that turns in a bye adds 1/2 a person for the purposes of determining how many rounds you will play.
3. I finished swiss in first with 32, second was 31 and there were 2 at 30. Assuming no byes (there were some) the average score per round for the top four players was 7.7. 9-1, 8-2 seems like it is probably worth it based on that very anecdotal math.
4. There is a cut to top 2. You might miss out on one of the top spots but you won't lose the tournament due to a scenario like the one described by clontroper5. However more than two players finishing even 3 rounds giving away no more than a point a round seems pretty unlikely to me.
Great meeting you Gorthaur! And congrats!
Question: I chose not to use mybye thinking it was 8. If I had used it, all things being equal, I would have been at 31. Would the determiner been Mov between myself and second for the head to head? Or would there be a head to head to see who fought head to head in the end?
Its good to know for next regional that the bye is 9. That is WORTH taking in a 30 player tourney.
Again, congrats! Marathon armada is awesome! ![]()
That is weird. My TO said it was just an 8-2 (nothing to sneeze at) but a 9-1 is awesome. Since I am hitting two regionals I think I'll use my bye at the one I am traveling for, since I have a long drive back the night of the tournament, regardless of the score it will grant me.
