Regionals: To Bye or Not To Bye

By IronNerd, in Star Wars: Armada

Great meeting you Gorthaur! And congrats!

Question: I chose not to use mybye thinking it was 8. If I had used it, all things being equal, I would have been at 31. Would the determiner been Mov between myself and second for the head to head? Or would there be a head to head to see who fought head to head in the end?

Its good to know for next regional that the bye is 9. That is WORTH taking in a 30 player tourney.

Again, congrats! Marathon armada is awesome! :)

Just out of curiosity, where are you getting that info? The Tourney rules doc state a bye is an 8-2 with a 129 MOV.

It was said earlier that the TOME software provided by FFG counted them as 9-1s,

TOME does its own thing sometimes.

I am assuming that any store with a regional was provided the TOME software. Its interesting that it contradicts what FFG has said but maybe they had it initially at 9-1 and they never changed it in the software. I am curious, what MOV does it provide?

This is really interesting and FFG needs to advise what is correct. It sounds like Mike got the short end of this one thinking it was an 8-2 when he could have received a 9-1. I would think the tiebreaker for both having 31 points would be head to head if you had played the other person, if not it would go to MOV with the most recent FAQ.

If it is a 9-1 then I will definitely use my bye. 8-2 you still have a decent chance on improving it but not so much with an 9-1.

Oh, Im not sour grapes about it. It was a blast and lots of great friends!

It would be good to know the actual numbers going in for next time though. A 9 is a definite bye. An 8 is a "I might be able to do better..." decision :)

Great to meet you too Mike. I have to say I was a little disappointed I did not get to play an MSU imp list. I teched some things into my list to help deal with one. Although I can't complain about dodging someone as skilled at pushing them around as you :) .

I had heard before the tournament that championship byes were going to be weighted higher than a regular bye but I can't for the life of me remember where. In talking to Jared (The TO at Ohio Regionals) it seemed like there were some additional things in the tournament pack pertaining to regionals level and above tournaments only.

As to the tie, I would have to dig some of my tournament packets out again but I am not sure if head to head or MOV would take precedent. There is a very real chance you won't have played who you are tied with making head to head tricky to rely on.

Then or course starting with a 9-1 you might have played different opponents or touched off some kind of singularity that would have destroyed the very fabric of existence :D. We won't know until that time machine is finished.

I think the way its supposed to go is:

If they had played each other before reaching that point, then it would have been "Head to head" as a Tie breaker.

If they had not played each other, then its broken on MoV.

At least, that's the way I parse the rulings in my head, and it may be subject to the fact that I havn't had enough sleep and/or beer.

That certainly "feels" right to me. If I had won head to head but got bumped out because of MOV I might be a little salty.

I am heading to one tomorrow in Fargo ND. At least according to the FB page...only like 6 people signed up. I don't feel like I should use a bye at such a small event if only that few show up. Seems a waste...although might guarantee a good showing...I might have a chance to do another one in Winnipeg later and Minneapolis.

My regional is tomorrow. And I can't decide if I want to either. I'm wondering how it will turn out if 12 people show and 9 use the bye. How would that work for second plus round pairings I wonder.

Altahara -

I was wondering the same ;)

I kind of wanna sleep in so was considering the bye. Hehe....

Maybe if ALL the players use a bye... We just start immediately with the second round ? :)

are either of you going to Fargo?

Louisville ky.

Was the luisville SC byes 9-1?

Fargo's were 8-2 as normal. Winner went 9 9 10...so a bye wouldn't really help lol.

Louisville was 8 pts.

I think ohio messed up with the 9, OR, FFG has made the software TOME a 9 bye, while the rules say 8....(shrug) More fun to just play :)
