TLT and Draw Their Fire interaction questions

By sweetsweetdoughnuts, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Hi all,

Here's a scenario that is causing me some confusion.

A ship fires at ship A with a TLT. After evades are offset, there is one crit remaining.

If ship B at range 1 has Draw Their Fire can ship B take the crit instead of ship A?

And if so, does the TLT then reduce the damage down to a hit rather than a crit?

I *think* that the TLT turns the crit into a hit before DTF can take it. Thoughts? (And thanks in advance)

Card wordings are as follows:

Twin Laser Turret
Attack: ... Each time this attack hits, the defender suffers 1 damage. Then cancel all dice results.

Draw Their Fire
When a friendly ship at Range 1 is hit by an attack, you may suffer 1 of uncancelled (crit) results instead of the target ship.

DTF with dice cancelling has gone round and round quite a lot and never reached a resolution, because it is not a choice that would ever be chosen in a real game. (In the past it has been the interaction with DTF and Ion cannon/turrets).

If it is not possible because the change happens first, then the ship would cop the 1 damage from TLT for being hit.

If it IS possible, then the ship with DTF would suffer the crit, and THEN, the original target would still cop the TLT shot. This is because both DTF and TLT both trigger of the ship being hit.

Therefore, regardless of possible or not, the original defender will suffer 1 damage from the TLT.

The trick to resolving this is that TLT only ever does one thing to the dice--it cancels results. It doesn't ever turn a crit to a hit, but rather causes the target to suffer a point of damage.

So it doesn't matter whether you jump in the way with Draw Their Fire. That critical result will be canceled by TLT Whether it's assigned to the original target of the attack or to your ship with Draw Their Fire. And the ship that was hit is always the original target of the attack, so that's the only ship to which TLT causes damage.

The ship being targetted by the TLT never suffers an uncancelled [kaboom], so DTF never triggers.

Even if an uncancelled kaboom is all that is left and gets pulled away by DtF a ship that is hit is still the ship that is hit.

If I fire an Assault Missile at a ship and have an uncancelled [kaboom] left some nearby ship with DtF can take that result. However the ATTACK still hit my primary target so every ship at R1 of it will suffer that point of splash damage; this will include the ship that took the crit from the attack while amazingly the target actually does escape with no damage in this situation.

Thespaceinvader has it right. Look at the FAQ for Prince Xisor. He has the same timing as DtF. Here it is clear that weapons s that cancel dice results happen before abilities like DtF and Xisor.

Thanks all.
