Beginner question regarding specializations

By jphillipw, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Sorry if this is an obvious question. A group of friends and I are wanting to start playing, and I'm probably going to be the one to buy the resources. I'm planning on "fleshing out" (YUCK) a "lawful good" Hutt Colonist Marshall whose obligation is his conflict with his criminal family. I don't want to start with a significant investment, so my question is could I use the CRB in conjunction with the Hutt expansion book and a Marshal quick reference deck to accomplish this?

As I have not bought the CRB yet, could someone tell me if there are adventures in the CRB, or are we going to buy books for that?

Ideally to start from a budgeting point of view, I'd like to just buy the CRB, Marshal Deck, and if there was a Hutt deck that'd be great, too, especially if the CRB has adventures in it.

We've played the Beginner Box, but that's the only resource so far that we have. Thanks everyone for the input. So far my shopping list on Amazon consists of the CRB, Lords of Nal Hutta, and the Marshal deck. Is this enough to accomplish what I want and assist in character creation?

Thanks!

You could use those. The Marshall deck will just give you the skill tree though.

There are some small adventures in the core rule book, but it is mainly the info for making your own. There are currently 5 books for adventures and most of the books have at least 1 encounter or small adventure of some type.

There isn't a Hutt deck for either the playable species or for random hutt character cards.

I would say the core is a must have, from there you can make up whatever adventures you want!

You can download 4 more adventures off of the website as well!

Don't bother with the specialization decks unless you just love cards, the same info is available elsewhere (like the books, or other places too) and those pages are authorized to copy and better laid out anyway.

If you go with cards or other sources, the trees won't have the long explanation for the talents, just the summary, so you may find a weird situation where you're not sure how to apply a talent exactly. Generally speaking though you should be able to limp along for at least a few months of play (well depending on how often you play and how fast you advance of course) without the books, allowing you to start how you want, play a while and save your dough, and then do some cleanup and polish when you're able to buy the book.

Thanks everyone for the replies. That beggingforxp site looks like a great help.

and here I am, having spend every other evening of the last month or so copying the talent trees into an excel sheet for quick reference.....
