Sustained damage

By arel7784, in Twilight Imperium 3rd Edition

at one time I remember reading a clarification on how to apply damage to ships that can take sustained damage. I can't remember where I read it and what the exact rule is

can anyone help?

The basic question is? If there are 3 dreadnaughts in battle and 2 hits are scored. Can I apply these 2 hits to 2 seperate ships or do both hits have to both go toward the same ship

That would be the decision of the player owning the ships in question.

He (you) can decide either way, since no rule places any limit on the desicion.

I second what azuredarkness said.

Also, note that you can play cards IN BETWEEN hits. Specifically, you can play "Emergency Repairs" after taking one hit on a Dreadnought to repair it, and then apply the second hit on the same Dreadnought, allowing you to apply both hits to a Dreadnought and not have it die.

Really!

Adds to evil tactic list :)

Of course, the ideal situation would be to take 5 hits on 5 Dreadnoughts and then repair them all. demonio.gif

If you have all 4 Emergency Repairs in your hand, something's wrong.

And if you use them all in a single Space Battle, it better be a dang important battle cool.gif

Doesn't emergency repairs fix all your damaged ships in the space battle?

Yes, so if you had multiple dreadnoughts, you could play one emergency repair after taking damage to several of them to fix them all.

However, after further thinking, you really wouldn't be allowed to take 5 hits to a single dreadnought in one combat round. Why? Because by rule, you are only allowed to play one action card that is applied to the same thing at the same situation. IE, you can't play two Flank Speed cards on one activation, because they would be the same thing to the same situation. Along those lines, you couldn't play two Emergency Repairs cards to the same dreadnought in the same round; even if you took damage in between, I would interpret that still being "the same situation" - IE, the "remove casualties" phase.

Sigmazero what ever happened the AC FAQ list you were working on? I would love to know where that is so I can use it! happy.gif

It's in my signature :) To be fair, bnorton was the one working on compiling the list itself (while my web thing will host the list), but the link in my signature will take you to it :)

Some ACs don't really have much "need" for further explanation as they are pretty clear already; on my page, those ACs are available to search, but they will say that there was no special information about them.

You can play multiple emergency repairs on the same dread. Each ER would target a different situation (a different hit) even if they all target the same dread.

And if someone sabotages an ER, you can play a second ER on the same dread and same situation because the first one is considered to have not been played according to Sabotages wording.

Emergency Repairs doesn't block "hits" - it repairs ships that are damaged. The target is the SYSTEM, and it affects the ships in the system. Thus, playing it more than once in the same casualties phase to me seems like the same situation.

The rules say this:

"A player may never play two identical Action Cards for the same situation and/or on the same entity during one round. Example: A player cannot play two "Flank Speed" Action Cards on the same fleet in one round. The player may, however, play a “Flank Speed” on two different fleets in the same round."

The "entity" in this situation is the target system. The ships in the system may be part of this. But just like you can't use Flank Speed on the same FLEET twice in the same round (which may be "turn", but that doesn't make sense, since Flank Speed affects ALL ships moving to the system that turn, not just those coming from one place, so I think it may mean "entire round"). Even though you've assigned hits between playing the card again, it's still the same entity, and thus, by rule, you cannot play the card again.

However, maybe an official ruling on this would be beneficial. I will send a Rules Question to Corey :)
