Let's just say, WOTC made some bad business decisions. So, they had to give up their profitable Star Wars lines.
Random card booster packs
That was all around the time StarWars changed hands and as everyone knows they have their cash cow with is MtG. I'd also say they release 4ed DnD about that time to less than amazing results. To them the StarWars license may not have been something they wanted to deal with at the time especially considering how it was treated no better than 3rd on their priority list.
Knowing exactly what your getting in a game like this helps keep the costs down. The only way I would be down with randomized contents is if at the time a wave was released, those who pre-ordered or bought a ship during the week of the release would get a single card booster pack that had one of three or four Pilot card alternate arts for that new wave. You could get multiples of these packs based on how much you bought at release or something. You could get multiple singles and then trade the duplicates with friends until you had all of them.
Edited for clarification.

screw. this.

I have mentioned this idea before which cleaves to the introduction of collectibles. I agree that random booster packs are a bad idea for x wing. List building and planning future purchases around desired upgrades are part of the hobby. On the other hand gamers do love collectibles and limited edition products. Store championships, regionals, nationals and seasonal kits all offer such collectibles and there is a big secondary market growing in Trading and selling these items. Check ebay for the recent bling from the Hoth Open to see the double sided pilot cards on offer for up to $200US at the moment. So how about limited edition rerelease expansion packs with different paint schemes and the meta cards most often employed with those ships? The included upgrades could have an element of randomness introduced with multiple alternate art variants like the foil cards of ccgs. Numbered editions etc. Tell me that core die hard players wouldn't put their money down for one more of each ship for the collectible bling, and new players would want them for the easy access to meta centric upgrade cards.
Search your feelings. You know it be true.
Netrunner has two expansions coming out with the decks of the finalists or champion that won the tournament last year.
I guess it would be kinda neat if they'd made a 'championsship pack' with the 100 pts lists of the finalists. They will have to include the miniatures as well as the cards tough. This way new players have an easier, chepaer access to a compettive list and easier acces to some sought after cards. The cards included in this pack can all be made with alternate art.
I like this idea of a 100 pts list set. But it may expose us to less diversity just after it's released?
I would definitely welcome packs of cards though not random. I just don't like the way some cards make the game looks like a pay to win (please don't misunderstand me, some pilots can use a core set and a single extension and crush me easily with any list I can choose, I know that. But if you got theoretically two players identical with similar lists, the one that bought Epic ships or other factions ship he may never use in order to get the cards he want definitely is at an advantage - especially 0 cost cards!).
No.

Tune in next time!
This was worth opening the thread for! Thankyou kind sir!
Wow u guys are full of hate, let go ur anger and feel the force flow through you lol
Lets take the good from this thread and say that alt art cards in random expansions would be just awesome. They would be something really special if you didn't go for them and a motivation for collectors to go even more ham on their purchases. The equivalent of cosmetic dlc. FFG could make quite a bit of money on this without ruining the game and at presumably a small cost.

what about foil cards. Make it chase like Heroclix, force players to buy 12 TIE fighters to get a guaranteed FOIL Howlrunner.
Or a tie-in to Star Wars MMORPG , spectral speeder bike, only obtainable via X-wing miniatures. Should be 1 per 1.5 cases guaranteed, will be really good for us all as online retailers will buy cases en masse, dump mini stock and focus solely on grabbing the $600 mount for resale.
Is there something wrong with the search feature on this forum?
F*#! Random purchases!
GO play magic the gathering if you need your CCG fix!
