TFA- after the dust has settled. (Spoilers)

By Chief Hugh, in X-Wing

After watching it again tonight, many of the complaints here just don't make sense. So much was actually answered in the movie if you listened. Only two things I still don't get, why R2 just activating and why Leia would hug Rey, they had no connection on screen before that. Other then that, yeah I really can't say they didn't at least touch most of these other things.

Stupid shoe-horned explanation: They did talk on comm before landing but the movie didn't show that.

Another one of those: Leia did develope some force powers which gave her expert level empathy. Okay, we can agree that logicaly the scene made little sense, but it emotionaly worked.

R2 can actually be somewhat explained with the scene where BB-8 looks at R2. We don't know how long an Astromech needs to boot, but given how advanced they are it might be very long. The piece of Lukes map could have had additional instructions on it that made it possible to reactivate R2. So after BB-8 delivers the map he goes looking for R2. He finds him and transmits the additional instruction, thereby initiating R2s reboot. Fast forward to the end of the movie R2-D2 is finaly online and enters the scene just at the right moment.

JJ recently admitted he messed up having Leia hug rey instead of chewie.

He also admitted that R2 waking up is a deus ex machina without much thought behind it.

The entire moviemaking industry is lousy with stupid deus ex machina problems. It's my single overriding issue with almost every film, ever. It really isn't that hard to write a story that doesn't have gaping holes thinly papered over with coincidence and happenstance.

This one was bad even by the typically low standards in terms of pointless crap that is just pure laziness in conception. I was really hoping for better, but at least this one doesn't have midichlorians or convenient underwater tunnels.

R2D2 waking up is probably tied into what made him go to sleep right? So even if they didn't think of a reason for him waking up for Episode 7, in Episode 8 they could just be all 'yeah the force made him shut down until he was needed most' or w/e bs reason they want.

I can forgive the blatant (and to be honest boring since it's so predictable) copying of the plot line from ANH, as long as they take the franchise somewhere cool with the next films. It's too bad Ford/Han is gone as he was a great actor and a huge part of what made these movies entertaining.

:P

I stick to my 4/5 rating. I enjoyed it a lot, will purchase the blu-ray, but there's definitely some improvements that could be made.
