Is there any difference visually between the X-wing model that comes in the red starter box and the one from the X-wing expansion pack? I bought a few lots off ebay and I wanted to make sure I know which is which.
Starter X-wing vs Expansion X-Wing
Not as far as I know. I think the only variant is the X-Wing that comes with the Rebel Transport, it is painted differently.
Other than the cards/pilots of course, all 3 (starter, expansion, transport) are different.
Basically, no. There was a difference between the original release and the reprints, but that mainly involved the quality of the paint job. The newer ones were a little better, thinner paint and so on.
Edited by GullwindIs it worth buying both starter sets? I bought tfa set but was wondering if I should buy the original starter even though I have the individual expansions.
Yes. You get 2 sets of templates, extra dice, more ships, and mostly different upgrade cards.

I would say yes. It's good to have two core sets anyways, and there are some great cards in the original core you can't get anywhere else, mainly Biggs and R2D2.
Thanks, folks.
If you want R2D2 Astromech yes you do.

It's nice and it's worth it, but it's not essential. If you're just starting off your collection, pick up a few more expansions first. If you have the essential expansions, then definitely look at a second core set; it's worth it for the extra rocks, dice, and cards.
There is a difference visually between the T65 and the T70. T70 has bigger cockpit, bigger engines, not a great deal, but they are most definitely not the same ship. I dont know if it's my eyes, but the T70 looks a little bigger.

Second set of templates aren't really that useful and the damage deck is obsolete, BUT
- T-65 X-wing with Luke Skywalker and Biggs Darklighter, two fo the best T-65 pilot cards,
- Two TIE fighters with Night Beast, Dark Curse and Mauler Mithel pilots. Dark Curse is one of the most popular TIE uniques,
- R2-D2 unique astromech, one of the two cards that can be used for the very powerful Rebel Regeneration archetype,
- Second set of dice. Going over six attack dice is beyond rare, so you'll never have to reroll again unless you're rerolling,
- The asteroids are different, giving you more obstacle options.
ST Core and OT core is a much better buy than the 2x OT core we all did way back in Wave 1.

Templates are never not useful, as is a damage deck, for when you host games at home.

The Classic set comes with TIE-Fighters, useful for building tie-swarms. a T-65, okish to have, Biggs is definitely nice to have, another set of dice (you want to have two dice set for one player), R2-D2 a must have upgrade, a second different set of damage deck and another set of maneuver templates.
So, yeah R2-D2 alone makes it a must buy, the TIE-Fighter and dice make it good value for your money and the second damage set and templates and X-Wing are nice to play at home with friends who are not themselves into buying into X-Wing yet.
So yeah, you should buy the Red Core Set at some point. If that point is right now for you is debatable. R2-D2 can be replaced by a proxie, TIE-Swarms are not for everyone, additional dice optional, and acrylic and magnetic templates are better than the cardboard templates from FFG.

"How much does it cost to get into this game?"
"You just buy a couple ships you like, il give you some dice, asteroids, damage deck and templates."

You've already got the new damage deck and you already have templates. You don't need a second set unless you desperately want to clutter the table with redundant ones.

I had heard about X-wing coming out and avoided it as I was into Warhammer. I spent all day losing 3 games of Warhammer at a tournament. There was a guy who had the starter set back in Wave 1. I played 2 generic Tie Fighters and he played Luke Skywalker with R2-D2. I killed Luke in 5 turns. I changed game systems then and never looked back.
I dont know if it's my eyes, but the T70 looks a little bigger.
It's bigger. The T-70 won't fit in the cut outs for T-65 in battlefoam trays.
