Best paint to use?

Going to try repainting a few of my minis but wondering wh as t I should look for as far as a good paint. Water bade, oil base, brand preference? Also what to avoid?

Most people use acrylic paint for minis. Oil takes too long to dry for most people.

There are two main types of paint that people like. One is the Games Workshop paints, because they are used to them. They have a flip top, though, and can dry out if you leave the top open too often. I've found you can easily rejuvenate them with something called Acrylic Medium pretty easy, though. So, it's not really so much of an issue. The second group of paints are those that aren't GW paints and have dropper type tops that you drip the paint on whatever surface you want. There are a few companies that have all seemed fine to me. Vallejo or Reaper as the two most popular.

What is probably the biggest deciding factor? Whichever you can find at your local hobby store. Seriously. Whenever you just NEED that one color to get something done, you don't want to order online and wait days for it to show. You just want to drive to the hobby store and get the dang paint. Now, if you have both at the local game store......then it all depends.

Most people find the Games Workshop shades to be the best. I love 'em. That's the brown and black stains. I've used one or two of the others and it just isn't the same. They are the best. GW also makes good metallic colors. I always go GW with colors.

You will probably want to think about what colors you want to use. Will you mix up your own paints a lot? If so, get a wet pallet. If you aren't, then don't worry about it too much.

You will need some decent brushes. Many go gaga for the Windsor Newton Series 7 brushes. I've used them and I think they would be good for X-wing, but I hated them for Warhammer painting. The tips are too fine for anything but detail work, even on the bigger brushes. X-wing has small minis, though, so you are fine.

Does that help?

Use house paints, I haven't tried it but they're good durable paints.

great advice

what heychadwick says. I have a GW closeby so I use Citadel paints for the most part but also have some Vallejo which are also delightful. Everyone will give you brush advice, I got a set of these on Amazon and wuv them. Highly recommend using them along with a dash of this

I use Army Painter paints. They are a bit cheaper and comparable to GW paints from what I gathered and they come in dropper bottles instead of pots, which I prefer.

Oh, yeah. I didn't get to this, but you really need to get this stuff. You can find it at local hobby shops. All art professionals use it. It's really the best. It cleans your brushes amazingly well. It can help retrain the tip of your brush. It's fantastic.

I didn't even get into the ways you should or should not store your brushes. Just....don't get them wet and store them bristles up. That will get the water on the bristle to go into the ferring (metal bit) and undo the glue holding the bristles in.
