Blocking Attack Shuttle deployment

By balindamood, in X-Wing Rules Questions

We had a weird corner case last night. I got behind the Ghost with a docked shuttle with my missile swarm. I killed the Ghost, and by thenrules, the Shuttle takes one damage and must deploy, but he had no where to go. 6-Z95's and the edge of the board meant he was totally blocked.

What is supposed to happen then? We just put the shuttle in the vacuous hole the Ghost left w/o actions.

I'm not sure the rules for deployment on death deal with this.

My ruling would be as yours - deploy it touching the nearest ship, after removing the Ghost to make room.

Wrong. Disregard. See below. Also worth noting that for successful deployment on death, the shuttle takes a face down damage card, not just a damage. So it will deploy with one damage to its hull and two shields.

I would guess destroyed. If it couldn't deploy. ???

It follows the normal overlapping rules. You have to push back the ship along the templates and it skips the action phase.

I assume that you can remove the Ghost to make space if necessary.

Its covered by the rules : "after deployment if it did not overlap a ship, perform an action". A bit different topic but its clear there it follows normal overlapping rules.

Fuzzywookie is correct

If the carrier ship is destroyed (but has not fled the battlefield), before it is removed from the play area, each docked ship receives 1 facedown Damage card and must immediately Deploy.

So you don't move the Ghost to make room.

After a VCX-100 equipped with the Ghost Title card executes a maneuver, it may deploy a docked Attack Shuttle equipped with the Phantom Title card. To deploy, follow these steps:

  • Choose a maneuver on the Phantom's maneuver dial (this does not count as revealing a dial).
  • Take the maneuver template that matches the chosen maneuver and slide the template between the rear guides on the Ghost.
  • Take the Phantom ship and place it at the opposite end of the template, sliding the rear guides of the ship into the opposite end of the template. This counts as a maneuver. If this maneuver causes the Phantom to overlap an obstacle or another ship, it follows the normal rules for overlapping. If this causes a situation in which the Phantom cannot be placed in the play area, the Phantom is destroyed.
  • If the Phantom has not overlapped an obstacle or another ship and is not stressed, it may perform one action.

So you choose a maneuver, and if the docked ship can't fit using that maneuver, then it's destroyed. (so no switching to a different one if it doesn't fit.)

From the VCX-100 rules insert I find the following:

1. A ship that bumps on deployment is treated like a ship that bumps on a maneuver, tracing its path backwards along the template until you find a spot that it can fit.

2. If you can't find a spot that it can fit, the deploying ship is destroyed.

3. Upon destruction of the Ghost, the Phantom is allowed to deploy before the Ghost is removed.

Based on the that information, the Phantom is destroyed if you are unable to place it before removing the Ghost from the table.
