Is the Triple TIE Phantom viable?

By Archangelspiv, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hi guys and gals,

I was talking to my brother on the phone, he lives 2000 miles away on the other side of the country, and he is running a campaign that doesnt allow named pilots. I like the idea, but we got to talking about different ships, and he was thinking of running triple Shadow Squadron Pilots, with Adv Cloaking device and Fire Control system. I like the build but I dont have a lot of experience flying these.

What are your thoughts on these?

Shadow Squadron Pilot - 27

FCS - 2

Adv Cloaking Device - 4

So 33x 3 and 1 point initiative bid.

Edited to attempt to take the word viable out of the title...alas I cannot...

I've never flown a Phantom but I've always had the idea that they were meant to zip around on their own and avoid being the center of attention. With three in a list it might be difficult to avoid the heat, but with 12-15 dice a turn on the attack you should be able to melt anything that tries to get you. It'll suffer against stresshog Y-Wings which will probably be quite popular in a "no named pilot" campaign. Otherwise it looks good and a fun list to fly!

Can you take named crew? Might be worth dropping one of them down to a Sigma to take something like Agent Kallus for that extra damage and survivability, and you've still got a 1 point initiative bid.

Yeah, you can take named crew, just not unique pilots. I like the Shadow squadron guys as they would deploy after things like contracted scouts etc. I thought about the Intelligence agent, means you can decloak more likely where you need to be too.

Yes, it is!

I have played with this list - but you will probably not win any tournaments with it; but it is fun!

Sigma Squadron Pilot (25)
Sensor Jammer (4)
Recon Specialist (3)
Stygium Particle Accelerator (2)

In a tournament with no named pilots allowed, triple phantoms would be quite strong. The stresshog is not in fact a problem for this list, since it gets erased by all those attack dice fairly quick (only getting to double stress once before going poof).

Its biggest counter actually will be Royal Guards. At PS 6, they will have a relatively easy time getting shots before ACD kicks in.
