Are We Part of the Problem?

By Grayfax, in X-Wing

@ HurricaneMaanen - Sorry I'm not quoting, but I'm typing on a phone and trying to format on this contraption does my box in.

If you feel that you posting here has made a difference, fair enough. But my gut tells me you haven't. It may or may not get some people to think about their behaviour, and if it does then well done. It won't stop offenders in any way, shape or form.

I don't know you, and I'm not casting aspersions, but I just can't reconcile giving up with any woman I know. The ones I know would have made the police listen. And I'll quantify that in case someone accuses me of saying that you're either a liar or weak. Because I'm not. I work in an industry that is 50/50 men and women. One where both are paid equally. I have worked with young women who regularly put men to shame when it comes to getting into a trench and grafting.

I also have 3 sisters, a daughter and a wife, and not one of them would take no from the authorities as an answer. So, I'm sorry, but not confronting the issues head on is alien, not only to me, but I'd confidently say the women I know and work with.

Cheers

No problem for not quoting, I understand formatting can be weird on mobile.

Maybe I didn't make a difference. That's okay. I was participating in a conversation and showing my side of the story. That's it. It's interesting to me that my side of things has gotten so much more scrutiny than all the others.

I'm sorry you don't understand the complex psychological things one goes through after an assault, but, when you've just been violated in such an extreme way and you're talking to someone who's supposed to protect and help you, and they're hurling things at you saying you were at fault.. .you start to believe it. It takes a lot of therapy to overcome.

I'm gonna butt in here, because something like this happened to my niece. (only she was at a pub, or club).

Precisely none of the above is ok.

Precisely none of the above is limited or especial to gaming.

I won't add what i'd like to do to the subhuman scum that did this, and if anything happened like this to my daughter well. I wouldn't kill them. This would not be a mercy.

Also, PTL + my own special ability of gaining a focus when I barrel roll.

Note. Personal.

Point of which I'll admit to being sexist. Automatic desire to be protective in situations like this.

Consider apology implied.

Never said it was an epidemic. Just shared my experiences and participated in a conversation. To a lot more scrutiny than most other posters.

As a dad of three girls, I appreciate it.

I'm a little old fashioned, but I don't trust guys around my daughters and I'd prefer they never be alone with one.

Agreed. In my first post I said it isn't just gaming, it's everywhere. It's an overall attitude that is had towards women.

It happened and it's over. I can't change it. But what I can do is attempt to open some eyes, any chance I get.

As long as you'd be protective if it happened to a guy, too, you're all good. It's not sexist to want to protect someone from harm.

Hah, it's an interested thing. Eventually they will be alone with them. What you have to do is give them the tools to protect themselves. My mom taught me to always be the one driving, so I could escape. She taught me to always have someone who knew where I was. It helps, it does.

Sometimes it's the monsters you know, and sometimes it's a fluke. You can do everything to mitigate but if someone wants to attack they will.

Hence my point.

With my guy friends, I'm a lot more inclined to tell them to toughen up. With a lady I'll admit to being inclined to being more protective. Out of date gender roles. I'll admit that fault.

I'll stand at a brothers side.

I'd stand in front of a lady.

There is the difference. Again. I admit my fault openly.

You see, there's a reason that I'm extremely sceptical about what people say on the interwebs, and this is a true story.

I used to post on the MTGO forums. For those of you who know them, I started the "The Off on a Tangent Thread". My username was Bilskilner.

There used to be a Dutch poster who was female. She was very active, on the boards most days. She was very articulate and funny.

The problem was, that she actually wasn't a female and only confessed when he was about to be outed by someone who realised that he was taking the piss.

So, I take everything I see on the internet with a large dose of salts.

Don't get mired in semantics. The most important thing is that you stood up.

For what it's worth, you're welcome to come to the tournaments I'm TOing and verify that I present as female. It's okay to be skeptical however.. you know... it costs you nothing to not be a jerk. Not saying you have been. Just being general.

Interesting. We talk about things that happen at tournaments all the time. Now it's about sexual harassment, and suddenly I read 'your memory may be faulty' for the first time. What makes this so different that now we would doubt a stranger's ability to remember?

It's the exact same standard i hold everything to, i have friends who'll say one thing one week and change their view in the space of seven days and swear they've never said anything like that.

On these very forums we've had posters claim something was said in a thread and I went through 7 pages and showed they were incorrect, I don't think they were lying they just misremembered.

Human memory is not reliable thinking about a past event can actually change that memory this is science:

https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/am-i-right/201307/your-memory-isnt-what-you-think-it-is

So no I do not take anyone's memory of an event as 100% correct not even my own, if anyone want's me to believe anything they must prove it with more than their personal testimony.

Heck just last week a friend i play x-wing with swore blind recspec did not require you to perform a focus action to get the extra token, I don't think he was lying he just remembered the card wrong and i had to dig it out and show him.

TLDR: memory you cant trust it.

Baaa,

Caught.

Well, I think we all learned something important here today.....

When it comes to post like these, they're like this bunny!

Once in 40k 5th ed I SWORE there was a rule, which I REALLY remember reading where if you cannot harm your own unit if it is in close combat with an enemy unit, you can shoot into that close combat.

Not in any rulebook. Still remember seeing it, physically, in the rulebook.

But, this is a much more sensitive subject than 40k rules. even to us. A lot more at stake, a lot more background and stigma and social discussion and fracas.

Getting a rule in a game wrong, although heresy is acceptable.

Sexual assault is not.

....Oh. That one. Yeah.

The conversation never ends well.

Maby that's the core of the problem.

And maby, just maby, that means we shouldn't shut this down when it's brought up again, but instead actually embrace the discussion, instead of just going "oh here we go again"...

Well, I think we all learned something important here today.....

What he is doing is essentially barging in to a conversation being held in a private sound proof room and telling everyone to shut up because he doesn't like what they are talking about. Also we can all see you name above your icon beside each post, you don't need to sign each one like its some kind of work of art.

Ouch, don't blow a gasket, let the guy sign his name if he wants to gosh.
