Personally I thought it was a bit cheeky, and hilarious.
Having read the reasoning behind doing it, there's nothing I see to get offended about.

Maybe it's just me, but I think "shield coins" exhibits a deep lack of chill and is not very "fly casual."
fly casual doesnt mean anything except for an excuse to be mad about something or someone you dont like.
every time its brought up on here its just someone complaining about someone else doing something they dislike even if its harmless like using different tokens or whatever. if you really are casual about something you wouldnt care what the guy uses for tokens in the game you didnt play in (or did play in, really.)
i have no chill, im melting down, i dont post casual. im all riled up. im letting the hate flow through me.

Hey. Thanks for taking the time to share your feelings. I'm sorry that our opinions don't align on this particular issue. I don't know that anybody who has weighed in on this has been "mad," or "hurt," or "offended," as I've seen suggested multiple times now. Have a great night!
Why do we keep having these lame threads recently?
"He's using his tournament award cards/dice/rulers, he must be trying to intimidate me"
"He's using coins as shield tokens, he must be trying to intimidate me"
Really? Are we actively trying to get pointlessly offended over absolutely nothing? I work with 2nd grade and under children and they have less petty squabbles than this.
I just don't get the intimation thing though. I have this image of the OKC Thunder visiting the Garden and asking the Celtics* to take down all their World Championship banners (17 and counting) from the rafters cause they are intimidated.
If someone puts down 8 coins in front of me I'm gonna smile and say "Oh yeah. It's on like Donkey Kong"** and can't wait to try to whoop them. ![]()
If I may ask all you with coins one thing though: please don't flip them to decide initiative. It always just ends up smashing my stuff. ![]()
* Are sportsball references okay on here?
** That's what the kids are saying, right?

Brady's got enough superbowl rings he could use them for shield tokens. (just think of how expensive those shields would be)

Welcome to the internet where people are always pointlessly offended and most people are not as smart as your 2nd graders.
You could get intimidated.
Or, you could see it as an opportunity. Maybe you'll learn something from this person, be it savvy eBay skillz or some solid X-Wing tactics. That's why people like to play in so many Store Championships; they like the challenge of facing off against top players.
The swag is, after a while, a secondary goal. It's not a far of second, but it is second none the less.
My favorite part about topics like this is it's a group of people being upset... that another group is upset... about something they don't think they should be upset about...
Humanity is wonderful, isn't it?
All you need to know about situations like this is this- Does it upset more than one person? If yes, then that person which is "upsetting" others with whatever action simply needs to decide if they get enough joy or fulfillment out of it to continue doing it knowing it may upset some.
Go ahead and have your discussion if this is wrong or right, but I think this guy has made his decision.
Are you objecting to people using a single die to track shields, or somebody using a bunch of d6s as Shield tokens? Because the latter looked rather snazzy when I saw it, tbh.As long as they do not use dice for ShieldTokens I dont care what they use instead.
A single die to count shields on a ship

Not all of us are upset that one group is upset. I think. In fact I find that I'm emotionally detached from the situation. All I was attempting to do is talk the people that happen to be upset about the issue off of the ledge and to prevent this from, well, actually being an issue. (And apparently failed miserably. Yay Internet discussions!) I also want to encourage members of the community to stop hiding behind the call of "fly casual" when a player does something that they do not agree with when the act itself does not actually fly in the face of "fly casual".
I'm not saying that players have to like that someone used coins as shield tokens. What I'm saying is that this act is not a reason to bust out the torches and pitchforks.
Haha, if I was playing someone like this and they ended up being a cocky jerk, as their excessive bling suggests they might be, I would call the judge over to rule that they need to use actual tokens. Then when they go to power up their shields, I'd go mynock on them and say "Sorry, can't let you do that in a tournament. That's a missed opportunity. You should have powered up your shields at the beginning of the game. Fly better bro."
At least half-joking here.
I don't think the Mynock Podcast guys are "cocky jerks", at least not the "jerk" part. They seem like nice guys. But from what I've heard of their podcast, it's 1/3 bragging, 1/3 drama, and 1/3 actual content, so this behavior doesn't surprise me. I might re-listen to their podcast now to hear the 1/3 drama this thread inspires.

The best part about this is a player did in fact call a judge... who then ruled that since they are identical and provided by ffg, they are legal to use.
Edited by VyzDid those people do well in the Open?
I would be interested to know if their dominance at local tournaments translated at the Open.
Seeing that ridiculous display of showboatery def made me wanna root for the other guy I can tell you that
Brad and I did make the cut to 8 (he made final table)! Shazbot, who'd you root for when we got mirror matched in the first round of elims? ![]()
I don't think any of our opponents had issues with us or our silly, egotistical merriment. If anyone did, please message me and I'll make it right somehow.
Fly better bro."
If you're not careful, taunting him like that will lead him to Fly Even Better. Then you're screwed.
I find it interesting how different cultures (US vs non-US) players are viewing this situation. Just try and remember what is exceptable in your house may not be exceptable in someone else's house.

Welcome to the internet.
You really wanna see people getting offended over nothing? There's these two funny little websites called Tumblr and Twitter... Each is a great argument for wiping out the human race and starting all over again.

I was 100% offended. I was disgusted by your little "act" and demand payment of 5 Store Championship coins as reparations for your heinous behavior.

This game is part mental gymnastics, why not use something like this to throw your opponents off guard?
If coins as shield tokens throw one off their game maybe they should find a different game.
You don't think going against a play who has placed top 4 in at least 8 tournaments is intimidating in the least?
This really is not the goal of the coin shields tomfoolery. When people are slinging out Regionals or higher templates, it just means you better bring your A-game. I faced players whose NAMES alone are intimidating, and I highly doubt they cared one whit.
Admittedly, I do this locally as well, but people generally know me as I'm obviously very active. I think new and casual players find me friendly and engaging, and the tournament mainstays that have beaten me a bunch over the years aren't intimidated by a little clinking.
When did it become a bad thing to be proud of your achievements? My wife has 2 university degrees proudly displayed on our wall. I don't, so does that mean I should shame her or get mad at her for what she has accomplished that I haven't? While it's a game it's not different. Those guys put time and effort into winning those coins. They should be congratulated for their achievements, not subject to ridicule for doing well at a game we all play. Where is the problem with excelling at something?
I thought I was out, and they pull me back in.
I am not denigrating prize support. I think they're cool! Dice, acrylics, alt-arts, playmats, etc. are awesome and I love FFG for producing them. And yes, use your SC Challenge Coin to flip for initiative before a game. It's a cool coin.
This is not about prize support.
This is about (legally) using multiples of a "prestige" item (and yes, I've read the refutation to this - that I can just go buy one on eBay) in such a way that suggests that, at your level, they've got about as much value to you as a cardboard token.
This is not hanging a degree on a wall. This is using a degree as a coaster, because you just have so gosh-darn many of the things. If you want to do that, it's fine - you've earned it and it's not my place to tell you what to do with it. But maybe it can seem like a little much.
My thoughts summed up exactly. The statement is you are so good and have so many of these they have much less value to you, and I want you to recognize that fact by using them as tokens in game. Just like shadeleader says, do what you want, you've earned them, but I'm free to think this is a reflection of character. If you try to use it as an intimidation tactic, I may respond by teasing you as your shield token coins start disappearing off your ships.
I actually prize them quite highly!

I'm very bad, wanna play?
Just so you know I use my military medals with eyes, squigglys, etc. drawn on them so everyone can know what actions I'm taking. I use my pairs of 2010-2016 emmy awards as ID markers for each of my ships. Dang, I gotta wait until next year to play my 8 tie swarm properly.
Fly sexy bro.

Outside the US, this act is viewed as a slap in the face to your opponent and very disrespectful. While it may not be an issue in the US, those of us outside the US view this differently.
This is not unlike wiping your nose with a $20 bill and discarding it in public. Regardless of whether or not you can do it, those viewing this behaviour will react to it unfavourably in most cases as you can see from the fact that this thread even exists.
Not all cultures view pride and bragging the same way.
While you are entitled to do this, those of us who aren't necessarily from the US are also entitled to view it as we do.
For those that are arguing about using these coins is the same as using the tokens, I'm sorry but you have missed the picture completely. The range rulers and tokens are provided by FFG and are replacements for the cardboard you get with the original game kit. There is no mention of using coins as shield tokens anywhere. Did they not also give out actual acrylic shield tokens at this event? Those look quite a bit different in both shape and size from the coins don't you think?
There has been some "reflection on character" talk here. It's true, (like most anyone else) I have character flaws. But I'm relieved that some of the people I actually interacted with at Hoth posted here, and didn't find the shields or me offensive. It is intended as funsies and ironic self-mocking of my insatiable lust for those coins.
But this is the interesting post to me. I believe bragging is frowned upon universally. (And that's something I feel strangers are projecting onto me; I don't take myself seriously.)
Clearly, within the scope of American culture, there is pushback as well, or we wouldn't be seeing this thread. While I am proudly American, born and raised, my family were immigrants. Asian cultures are pretty stodgy, but there's room for silly ostentation in the proper context there as well. "Outside the US" is a pretty big place. Could I ask which culture you're referring to? I was not going for "a disrespectful slap in the face" at all.
If a player did this with aloof condescension, I'd be with you. I like to think that my friendly smile and engaging demeanor puts those concerns to rest whenever I set up to play, shield coins or no.
