As long as they do not use dice for ShieldTokens I dont care what they use instead.
Shield coins?
How many are we talking about? I won 4 in my attempt to get that elusive win (which never did happen)... But 4 isn't anywhere near enough for most lists...
Omega, whisper, Yorr for Brad's list. So, 8. It's impressive, but I'm fairly certain some of those were borrowed, mostly cause I don't see the names of those players in the list jugglers for the amount of top wins required.
Brad did earn them all. List Juggler doesn't have nearly all the store championships. In my area, Minneapols/StPaul, I don't know that many, if any, reported them in List Juggler.

I played Dee early on (and I think I was the only one to beat him in swiss). He was a great player, and I was mainly just jealous that he had a chance to attend so many events.
I thought the coin thing was ridiculous, but in a fun sort of way.
It's flashy
I can respect flashy
i see it differently... I see somebody that spent a BUNCH of money to potentially win an over-sized alt art card..lol but hey what ever floats their boat. however i am wondering how they even have space for the coins?
I thought this was already hashed out on Reddit? No? Cool I can just cut and paste my comment from there.
Y'all know FFG encourages you to bring the coins you win out. For example check the description of the '16 Spring Kit:
Show off your love for Star Wars™ during each match with this official challenge coin depicting the iconic X-Wing!
What's the point of giving 'em away if people are just going to lock them in a drawer?
no no no you use them to "Coin" folks so you can get free drinks...
This game is part mental gymnastics, why not use something like this to throw your opponents off guard?

If coins as shield tokens throw one off their game maybe they should find a different game.

You don't think going against a play who has placed top 4 in at least 8 tournaments is intimidating in the least?
I love the idea of my opponent using coins as shield tokens. I hate the little cardboard bits. Using coins in this way provides me with information by just looking across the table and not having to ask my opponent. It also provides me with other useful information. Such as this player is a ringer I need to step up my game. Or this guy went though a lot of money and trouble to get all these coins off of eBay. All information is valuable.
Maybe it's just me, but I think "shield coins" exhibits a deep lack of chill and is not very "fly casual."

No I don't. Flying little spaceships around a mat with fellow overweight, white, balding dude is not what I categorize as intimidating.

That's where you are wrong and are bending "fly casual" to fit your needs. Using coins as shield tokens in no way affects the game for you. You are forcing your world view onto someone else. The issue is with *you* not the other player.
If he was chucking the coins at you during the match then, ya, there is an issue with the coins. But barring that there is no issue with a player playing the way he/she sees fit as long as it doesn't impede you playing the game.
This hangup with all of you "offended" by the player using these coins during a matchup is *your* hangup. And forcing your views onto his game is the opposite of fly casual.

You're coming in a little hot here, maybe.
But, I mean, what do I know? I'm playing this whole game wrong.
I'm not coming in hot. At least I don't think I am. I'm not angry at either side in this. I don't have any dog in the fight. What is unfair is when people twist "fly casual" to their needs when a player does something that they don't necessarily agree with.
I'm not saying folks have to like people using coins as shield tokens. What I'm saying is that none of you have the right to judge them on it.

I'm not trying to tell anybody how to play their game. Maybe just that, in certain circumstances, attempting to intimidate your opponent by plunking a pile giant metal prizes down on the table is not "cool."
Whether he's coming in hot or not he's correct.
And yes, it is very silly to be intimidated by a bunch of SC level swag. There are a ton on areas with an over abundance of SCs, some of which arent going to draw enough people to make a Top 4 finish a noteworthy accomplishment. It's silly to get intimidated over any level of swag, as it all can be purchased over the internet, but GNK or SC swag is the most silly to get psyched out by.

No one is plunking down anything. If they are being used as Shield Tokens, they are across the table on the opponents cards.
By your line of reasoning it's rude to use any event related swag as someone could feel intimidated by your manuver templates, acrylic tokens, alt-arts, dice, etc. Some of which is much more difficult to get then a bunch of challenge coins. As I stated above it is silly to be intimidated by any of that, especially SC level stuff, so why pander to it?

I understand where the shield tokens go. Thank you. And when I said "plunking," I was referring to setup.
That said, this is not a hill I intend to die on. Like I said, I'm not trying to tell anybody how to play their game. Just sharing my opinion, which is in no way binding. Sorry for interrupting.

A couple of years ago In my first tournament I played someone who was using Championship range rulers, did it put me on edge, maybe, did it effect whether I had a fun game, possibly.
In my mind and this is my opinion, it's not very "Fly Casual"
Edited by AshleyWhen did it become a bad thing to be proud of your achievements? My wife has 2 university degrees proudly displayed on our wall. I don't, so does that mean I should shame her or get mad at her for what she has accomplished that I haven't? While it's a game it's not different. Those guys put time and effort into winning those coins. They should be congratulated for their achievements, not subject to ridicule for doing well at a game we all play. Where is the problem with excelling at something?
Not quite the same is it really, a degree vs some small plastic tokens?
It just doesn't sit right with my opinion of Fly Casual, I heard them discussing it on the Mynock podcast and did come across a bit smug and gloaty( if such a word exists)
Again just my interpretation of Fly Casual, everyone has their own take.

Yeah tell the wife to take them down, rubbing your face in it every day!
Very Gloaty
