Baron of the Empire, just enough tools to be good?

By Biophysical, in X-Wing

Baron, Crack Shot, Autothrusters, Homing Missiles, Title = 28 points, roughly the ballpark of the modern Imperial pocket ace.

I feel like you just go for the Guidance Chips over AT at that point.

Maybe swap back to Juke as well so his 2-dice offense can contribute more once the missile is loose.

If you are going Homing, it might be fine to go with AutoThrusters over GC.

I enjoy running four of them with ptl, the title and thrusters. It's a really fun list.

This is what I took to the Hoth Open, and made it to the second day. I love the maneuverability they have. All my opponents commented that they are hard to pin down and put damage on.

How did you find the damage? 4 2-dice ships is just not a lot of offense. Definitely a durable list, though.

The target lock makes the most of the 2 dice attacks. But they live to fight at close quarters. So the best option is to get the range one 3 dice attack. But more often then not the games will go to time, so it made for an exhausting day.

Yeah these guys are built for knife fighting, also rocks are your friends.

dropping 5 points in a single attack that can fail spectacularly for thrusters of middling usefulness on a mid PS ship is not, imo, a great investment

I'd vote chips too. A crackshot TIE of any ship-type is an expendable oneshot anyway. Once it's blown its load, it's a blocker or a knife-fighter due to the crappiness of two 2 red dice. Juke will not help it there

even worse, Tie/v1 actively discourages focusing (without PTL) which leads to wonky nonsense with thruster rolls turning up tons of focus

the Omega Squaddie FO is an amazing Juke platform thanks to Relay, but when it isn't going to see any play outside of Omega L due to how hard the popular Wave 7 high PS just countered/ignored them. I don't see Juke making it anywhere else either, not until Soontir stops showing up anyway

Consider this (really just throwing out ideas here):

Baron, Crack Shot, Autothrusters, Homing Missiles, Title = 28 points, roughly the ballpark of the modern Imperial pocket ace.

Compared to the small ace, it is roughly as tough (Autothrusters + title), has a lower PS, but hits much harder once, and a bit less hard later. Consequently, it's stronger against lower PS ships with its ability to take stuff off the board quickly, but operates in a supporting role against higher PS aces. This is sort of the opposite of Omega Leader, who is strong against aces, but only okay against the beef.

Why not just go with Juke to make the Baron even better after the missile?

There are any number of good options. Chips are also great, save you 2 points, but make you more susceptible to opening salvos. I think the exact combination of small upgrades one takes will depend on where you think you need to be stronger and how many points you have. Overall employment on the table will not, I think, differ hugely, but I'm talking mostly from head-sims at this point.

I've been thinking about this, and now I see that one problem with the new Concussive/Homing Baron build is ... I suspect A-wings are much better at it:

Green Squadron Pilot (25)
A-Wing (19), A-Wing Test Pilot (0), Concussion Missiles (4), Crack Shot (1), Guidance Chips (0), Deadeye (1)

Deadeye buries the Baron's title, imo.

And title kind of steers you to TL as action anyways. It is also why I don't like prockets in the generic TAP's as well.

Even beyond that I would hate to make an ordnance carrier without EM, unless it is something like prockets Vader where I am confident it will be used.
