Huge Ships - Helped needed (new player)

By Gimgamgoo, in X-Wing Rules Questions

My lad and I started playing X-wing less than a month ago. We've spent quite a bit of money but had loads of great games. We have no local club or gaming shop so there's only us when it comes to rules interpretations. So far, the rules have been really straight forward and easy to pick up.

Last week, we bought ourselves the Tantive IV and the Imperial Raider so we could play some epic games. However, we've come across quite a few problems with the rules that we've not found an answer to. Things in the Huge ship rulebook just don't seem as clear as the main rules. I've scanned down about 15 pages of the rules forum here and not seen the answers. Hopefully someone can help out.

For the Epic 2 card ships...

1. Can the primary weapon fire out of the rear section of the ship or just the front?

2. My lad's Raider seems so much more OP than the Rebel ship. It fires it's primary weapon twice according to its own rulebook and it also can spend 2 energy to fire again as per instructions on the card. 3 x weapon value 4 per turn has won him all the games we've played with them so far. Is this right?

3. If the rear is crippled, so only 1 energy is showing, does this mean if I do a maneuver that gains me 3 energy, I can't assign 2 to a front secondary weapon and 1 to the rear. Do the energy tokens have to go onto the ship card before being assigned around the ship. In other words, I can only gain 1 energy max if crippled?

4. When a section of the ship has been damaged to the point it is crippled, do the critical cards stay on it and in play or are they removed when the ship card is turned over?

5. Although the Activation phase has the Huge ships go after all the small/large ships, we assumed the combat phase includes the Huge ships in normal pilot skill order mixed in with all the other ships.

6. My lad likes doing ramming maneuvers. The 2 huge ships side by side won't fit together. You can't position their bases in the right places because of the size of the ship. When this happens with small ships, you can add/subtract lengths of the stand - you can't do this with the huge ships. How do people deal with this?

Thanks for any help you can give us on our problems.

Hello, and welcome to the game, hope you and your son will enjoy it for a long time :)

-Just the front, the primary weapon belongs to the card section it is printed on.

The rules states that it can attack up to 2 times, and the card says you may spend 2 energy to attack again. 1+1= 2, so only 2 attacks with the primary weapon. However, if you equip the Gunner crew card you can get a third attack.

3. If the rear is crippled, so only 1 energy is showing, does this mean if I do a maneuver that gains me 3 energy, I can't assign 2 to a front secondary weapon and 1 to the rear. You immideatly discard any surplus energy, so only 1 energy gained.

4. When a section of the ship has been damaged to the point it is crippled, do the critical cards stay on it and in play or are they removed when the ship card is turned over?

The damage cards stays on and any critical effects are in play until the rest of the ship is destroyed.

5. Although the Activation phase has the Huge ships go after all the small/large ships, we assumed the combat phase includes the Huge ships in normal pilot skill order mixed in with all the other ships.

Yes, the combat phase follow normal order and rules with the huge ships mixed in.

It is unfortunately a problem, and we remove one of the ships from its pegs if this comes up.

Thanks. That helps loads.

It may also give me a chance against my lad's raider. :-)

I think You could add 1 large ship peg on top of the huge ship stands, or even have the Raider on large ship pegs if it is stable enough.

From the photo it also looks like you are on a regular playmat. For epic play you should play on 6x3 so there is room for everything.

You are more than welcome.

You have probably seen it already, but there is a discussion regarding the Raiders primary weapon here: https://community.fantasyflightgames.com/topic/184954-raider-primary-weapon-attacks/

And if you haven`t already, you can download the latest revisions of the rules and FAQ here: https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/products/x-wing/

Yeah, just seen that discussion.

How long till this Raider/Primary Attacks argument hits an offical FAQ? I have no idea on the regularity of this type of thing.

Is the Raider a newer design than the Tantive IV? The design of the Raider stand seemed way better with part of the cross shape of the stand sinking into the model. It's way more stable.

The mat was the 3'x'3 we bought initially. We did order a 6' x 3' mat at the same time as we ordered the two epic ships, but it's still 'awaiting dispatch'. :-( The table we're using is about 5.5' by 3' so should be great for a game soon. Such as shame there's no local scene or retailers that isn't a 2 hour round trip in the car.

The pegs were a great idea, just tried it on the Tantive, and seemed to work just fine. I had to hunt down som old large ship pegs though, the new ones from the Ghost/Jumpmaster didn`t fit.

Hard to say regarding the FAQ, it usually does not get updated that often, and I don`t think this is a question that has come up very often. Someone probably has to send an email to the devs to get a definitive answer.

The Raider is about 1 year newer than the Tantive, but it is the only huge ship that has that design, the newer Gozanti has the same design as the Tantive.
