That's one determined Chewbacca...

By Archangelspiv, in X-Wing

Hey guys and gals,

I am pretty sure I know the answer already, but I thought I would ask here to verify.

Chewbacca with Determination - I am guessing like all things that resolve at the same time you get to choose the order: If you get a Pilot Crit on Determined Chewy, can you discard it, or do you have to use his ability first and place it face down before the crit "resolved"?

Probably a simple question, but thought I would ask here anyway.

Yep, same time frame so you get to choose. Leebo is another fun one with Determination, because you can draw two damage cards and pick the one with the Pilot trait, and then discard it.

Then Rexler comes along goes lol and crits you to death anyway.

The way I roll dice I would need all the focus tokens just to get a hit in, let alone save one for his ability.

Chewie with Determination will look at that incoming face-up card and then has a choice to make: do I let determination have a look at if first and maybe discard it or am I hair-brained and decide to turn it face-down first so that when determination gets a chance to see it there's nothing special about the face-down card?

If you want to take the damage it is possible for Chewie to turn it down first but I'd suggest letting Determination do its thing first.

 You still get to flip it facedown if it isn't a pilot crit. You don't even have to make a choice about seeing it first; the card is dealt faceup already, that's the trigger for both abilities. If Determination applies, discard it. If not, flip it facedown.

I maybe did leave that part out. Chewie will get to flip the incoming face-up card regardless of what it is. It's just that if it gets flipped first the Determination can't touch it making it possible to take the damage. I have few ideas why you'd want to do that but if the proper order is not followed you could take a card as damage that you could have discarded; always make sure to use Determination first.

A crit is dealt face up ALWAYS.

Chewie's ability allows you to turn it down and not bother resolving it.

Determination allows you to discard it if it is a Pilot crit.

It is quite simple.

When you can resolve multiple things at the same time, it is the choice of the person who has the multiple abilities as to which order they want to resolve them in but in this case it doesn't matter.

This also means that a crit dealt to Chewi with a scum ship that has Boba can then discard their Boba card and decide which one of Chewie's cards to discard due to the wording of the Boba card. boba simply states when you are dealt a face up damage card and even though chewie ignores it and turns it down, it is still dealt that way triggering the Boba Crew Card.

As Ynot said, critical hits are always dealt faceup, there's no flipping involved in the process of dealing them. Rules Reference pg. 9 under Critical damage "If a ship is dealt a Damage card due to suffering critical damage, that card is dealt faceup..."

Both Chewbacca Pilot and Determination trigger off of that.

Chewbacca: "When you are dealt a faceup damage card, ..."

Determination: "When you are dealt a faceup damage card with the Pilot trait"

Both trigger off of being dealt a faceup damage card, Determination with the additional restriction of it having the Pilot trait. For any non-Pilot trait damage cards, Chewbacca triggers as normal. When a Pilot Damage card is dealt faceup, the trigger for both cards has occurred so the controlling player has a choice of order. You could choose to use Chewbacca to flip it facedown, but that would be silly when you can just use Determination to discard, thus ending the trigger.

EDIT: After reading your post again I now feel like you were trying to make the same argument as my very last sentence rather than arguing the opposite. If that's the case, I apologize.

Boba triggers off the same thing too which his 1 point card quite good.

After performing an attack, if the defender was dealt a faceup Damage card, you may discard this card to choose and discard 1 of the defender's Upgrade cards.

For example, a fun one...

Chewie gets a pilot crit with determination. He discards it. Boba Fett can still be used to ditch one of Chewie's upgrades since he was 'dealt' a face up card. He can even then get rid of determination. Ah, timing.

Boba's trigger isn't exactly the same as Determination or Chewbacca. Both of them trigger immediately on the card being dealt, before there's any further resolution of the attack. Boba Fett Crew triggers after the attack finishes resolving completely, once every damage card has been dealt and resolved.

Exactly. The point being though that he triggers regardless of chewie or determination but they get to use those abilities prior to Boba removing an upgrade card.

The act of being dealt the card triggers Boba but his effect doesn't take place until the attack is over.

I think so too.

Chewie looks at incoming face-up cards as does Determination. You can use them in either order. Chewie doesn't care much about the incoming card because he'll turn it over when he gets to it. Determination does care what the incoming card is and if it not a pilot card (which includes any face down cards) then it just passes on it.

Maybe Determination doesn't care what happens to the card before it gets to do something to it but just have Determination go first and no one needs to have any issues with weird stuff.

I see Boba crew has entered the conversation. As I think we've gotten to all Boba cares about is that a face-up card was initially dealt due to an attack. He doesn't care one bit about what happens to that card because once things are all settled he sneaks in during the chaos and takes something away.
