I must protest!!! (well...maybe just whine a little...)

By SlaveofChrist, in X-Wing Battle Reports

Hi Folks!

I just finished (or was just finished) in a game with my son this evening of X-Wings and ouch! Those Twin Laser Turret's are nasty, nasty, nasty!!!

After he picked his three ships (HWK-290, Z-95 Headhunter & an E-wing) I outfitted them for him (he's only five years old) and I used the new Twin Laser Turret's from the K-Wing on the Moldy Crow and he not only blasted my TIE Advanced with the Twin Laser Nightmare, but my TIE Bomber and finally my TIE Phantom!!! Arrrgghhh!!! Clearly I underestimated how strong they are! Wow! Being able to roll three dice for one hit twice  !!! It made me think of you veterans out there who play in tournaments and I was wondering if this new turret is a nightmare for you, especially in a Y-Wing BTL upgrade with three attacks per turn! Ouch! I'm sure my son will be asking for this turret upgrade again, but I might let a few games pass first (like I did with R2-regenerate shields-D2).

Seriously though, not complaining, just wanted to think if anyone else has had a similar experience with the Twin Laser Turret's in the competitive side of things, thanks and God bless :D .

Autothrusters. Found in the Staviper, at range 3 or when out of their firing arc (i.e. turrets) you can change a blank green die to an evade.

Also, your good friend R2-D2, you can put both an a T-70 X-wing.

Props for teaching the son early.

Yep, TLTs are rough on the receiving end. My brother ended a number of my TIEs with a couple of Scum Ys armed thusly.

If you're flying an ace arc dodger (or any arc dodger regardless of pilot skill value) then autothrusters are practically a "must have" for competitive tournament play. As soon as you come up against a multi-TLT list arc-dodgers without autothrusters start dropping like flies. Autothrusters isn't a guaranteed ticket to survival, but it helps.

The only reason I was able to win my most recent casual play match agaist three TLTs using my list of three TIE interceptors is because I stayed in range one of at least one TLT ship each round and stayed out of primary arcs so I always got the free evade from autothrusters. Even then, it was a close match.

Props for playing with your boy. My son is 4 and we love playing together. I also try to give him ships with turrets as well.

You might want to try a souped-up Soontir with autothrusters, or just melt the TLTs with ordinance. Out-damage them.

I was thinking about giving this list to my kids to run:

Horton Salm (36)
Y-Wing (25), R2 Astromech (1), Twin Laser Turret (6), Engine Upgrade (4)

Gold Squadron Pilot (29)
Y-Wing (18), R2 Astromech (1), Twin Laser Turret (6), Engine Upgrade (4)

Warden Squadron Pilot (34)
K-Wing (23), Advanced Proton Torpedoes (6), Extra Munitions (2), Hera Syndulla (1), Advanced SLAM (2)

Well, thanks everyone for the great suggestions! Autothrusters sound like the way to go, thank you for that. Very cool to hear that some of you play with your sons as well, thanks for the encouragement :) .

I like that last build Boba Rick! Very cool, I think I'll have to give it a wirl. I know my son loves Turret's, but he also loves the Y-Wings and he's been asking about trying out our new K-Wing too. Cheers!

How do you get your kids to play this game already? Mine just turned 5 and can't get him to learn any board games over a certain complexity. He is really smart kid, I am thinking he just doesn't have the patient to learn anything over a certain number of steps. Video games on the other hand, once he is willing to listen to your suggestions/directions he has no problem mastering.

Well, it helps that our PS3 broke and we never replaced it. My 4 year old boy is very patient, he has 3 older sisters. I think that might have something to do with it too. :-)

Hi Metal Mech!

Good question. I play Carcassonne with my son, but what I did was leave out all of the scoring and placement of meaples on the map. We just play by putting the different tiles together making a nice map. So in other words, I leave out some of the more complex parts of Carcassonne to be able to enjoy the best parts of the game. As he gets older, I will probably add more parts to the game.

As for X-Wings, I keep all of the game intact, but I coach him for a lot of the moves, actions, etc... that he can do. First I get him to pick a Faction, then I get him to pick some ships that he thinks are cool and then I outfit them for him. I use Fab's Squadron Generator to help me a lot. I should qualify that first I get him to pick his faction, then I build my own list without knowing what ships he is going to pick and that why I'm not playing against myself because I make my full list based only on what two factions are left. Then, after I have a total of my build, I use this as the benchmark for how much upgrade points I will do for my son on his ships. Sometimes I have let him sit with me while I go over all the options on his ships and he picks what he likes. Other times I just outfit them with cool stuff that he likes or has asked about. I don't tend to use many elite abilities and that adds more complexity.

When we actually play, I've already preset up every thing with giving him a choice of what side he wants to setup on (I have mine out first to help give him some targets to choose). The as we play, its like multiple choice questons for him as I'm coaching while still encouraging him to make his own decisions. He has to choose his own moves secretly and I might warn him fore activaton that his ships are getting close to the edge or an asteroid, just to remind him without actally picking a move for him. Then I tell him for his actions, here is what he can do. Sometimes, if there would be real benefit to having him do a certain action I "suggest" to help him out of his game. Having said that, he really is playing and planning his own game, with me just coaching him and teaching him on what he can to at every phase. So this part toes take a lot of patience, a lot of repetition, but in only a couple of games, he really gets it! Anyways, I hope that helps Metal Mech ^_^ God bless.

My 4 year old boy is too daring around the edges of the mat. He always turns just *a little* too late and flies off. Then he cries. Then I put the ship back on the mat and tell him not to worry about it.

I've found that three ships is max for him, anymore than that and his turn takes foreeeeeever.

lol

Boy I had to laugh at this one because I know exactly what you mean! I've changed my son's maneuver dial to the opposite heading after he's flown on the edge more than once and I also limit his ship builds to a max of three for the same reason! :P

There's a term in childhood development called 'scaffolding' - where, even if a child isn't ready to do something on his own terms, with help from someone older they can act at a higher age level.

This is a textbook example.

TLTs are nasty or the next best thing since sliced bread, depending on if you are on the receiving or giving side ;) They are not the end all and can be overdone but if used correctly in some form of moderation like one or two support ships such are Miranda Doni or Horton Salm or a pair of low cost Ys...yeah I think everyone gets the picture.

Sweet to hear that others are bringing up the next generation of gamers, no son myself :( However I do have some nephews, oldest is 14 and has a very solid game from squad list design all the way to tournament playing, he even beat me a couple of weeks ago. Second nephew is 7 and we started our first game which we did not get to finish 'cause he had to go, but yesterday he was over and wanted to finish so I think I have hooked another...mwhahahaha...oh wait...can my wallet afford that?

Very neat that you're playing X-wing with your nephews :) . And yes, I know what you mean for "...can my wallet afford that" . lol

My little girl likes Candyland, and the boy crawls around and chomps on the pieces. I hope X-wing is still around in a few years.

If some one comes into a match with just one TLT ship on a Hwk... Just kill the hwk.

How can you play with your son? My dad is 50 and still can't remember to take actions!

lol

Well, I guess the same way my son is able to navigate on my wife's iPad better than I can, maybe "You can teach a young pup new tricks" is the motto?

Anyways, I forgot to tell you guys & gals that my son beat his Dad twice over the weekend that my wife was away. One of the victories was very impressive on how he did it. He used a Tractor beam on my B-wing and had me do a barrel roll right to the edge of the map, so that I was like "Phew! Boy, it's a good thing I equipped my B-wing with Advanced Sensors!" so I could do a barrel roll back over before I did my movement - to only have him bring up his Firespray-31 and block me from doing that at which point I was like "Umm...how old are you???" Needless to say, I had no choice but to finish my maneuver and fly off the boundary to my B-wing's destruction (which still had one shield left and no damage). The second game he won by using Manaroo's ability on the Punishing One by transferring a Focus token to Talonbane Cobra, who already had a target lock on my one remaining TIE Phantom "Whisper" - needless to say, this was a very good move on his part, as he re-rolled his dice, to then use this new Focus token to change his rolls to all hits and finish off my last ship. Maybe this has to be the same way kids can learn so many different languages while they are still young (???). Anyways, it's very cool to be playing my son and how he has beaten me several times !

Even I couldn't do that!

The fanciest thing to ever happen in a game I played in was when my brother dropped a proton bomb out of his TIE Bomber and then ionized one of my ships so I ended up flying right on top of it.

You and me both! My son beat me again with playing the Hound's Tooth yesterday, and he used the speed zero maneuver (which I forgot about) needless to say, I overshot him, and landed up in his firing arc...kaboom! No more A-wing! Arrrgghhh!
