Maintaining non-tournament interest

By Maturin, in Star Wars: Armada

I'm not a chicken little type, but I do notice that people having been playing a little less Armada around here compared to the fall. I'm not sure if that's simply because it's tax season, or if people are moving on to other games, but I'd like to try and spice up interest in the game again locally. Yes, Regionals are coming and we are lucky to have one in town (Vancouver BC), but I'm thinking something that inspires people to get out to the local stores more regularly.

Maybe I'm looking for a league - but I'd like it to be more flexible tha a set time and place at a local store, since folks are distributed over several local FLGS's. We have he advantage of a local Facebook group that's decently active with pictures of games being posted - it'd be nice to leverage that.

Do any of you have suggestions for a league-like structure that can do the following?

A). Get people playing and reporting their game results online, with some sort of tracking. Leaderboard, campaign, or other such structure?

B). Encourage folks to vary their lists (and perhaps even defect to the Empire/Rebellion temporarily)

C). Not demand continuous attendance for any given party, in deference to everyone's busy schedule.

Thoughts? How about you Hothgarians or Portl-endorians with busy scenes?

I will post my league info when I get home tonight. Pittsburgh Season 1 is winding down now, and we are in a post-season elimination tournament.

There has been a small fall off at least in Australia for casual play. This is due to

* 6 store champs in the Sydney/NSW region

* Winter Kit Tournies

* Practice days/practice nights

* Upcoming Winter Kit tournies and Interstate Store Champs from Sydney over the next couple of weeks....

We are pretty burned out :P Really feeling Store Champ fatigue, this is probally true in the US? But hey **** it i'm leaving for another game after this post so whatever! I am swampped for games and appreciate the slow before regionals.

Well, I ain't no Hothgarian* but the locals tend to be quite competitive here. Not a bad thing but it does mean that certain elements may work or not work.

That being said, Modise recently posted a 4-game escalation campaign that I think could be fairly easy adapted to a 1-2 month escalation set up. It could particularly work if you're focusing on building up for new players as much as appealing to already established base.

Break it up, have each 'store community' work as a battlefront in a sector. They can keep track of the winners for each recorded games, and at the end of a two-week span, assign one 'VP' to the Rebels or Imperials for whichever side won more games. Each community's VP totals it up to determine who won that stage of the escalation campaign. That way, you an play any list you want, any faction you want, for as many games as you want, and it won't overwhelm the total number, it just becomes part of an aggregate.

With the escalation set up, you can start smal: play those larger games and end with a tournament event. The variable points numbers can make it a decent break from the tournament standard and encourage different list builds. That said, with regionals approaching, you may get people who just want to play strictly 300... and that's fine too, right? It's just a narrative perspective. But it's not like this hasn't been done before: Sullust's final round was 400 points when the tournament standard was still 300.

It's just a thought.

Worked with my Local LGS. They ordered the Tournament Kit.

Everyone joining the league tossed in $5. This was to repay the LGS for the Kit, and anything beyond that going into Further Prizes...

Once you tossed in your buckage, then your name was on the list.

We had a Set time + place to play, but as Admin, I'd let people Play a Game anywhere during the week - just that if they were going to play multiple games against the same person on the same day, they just listed their first game only.

You got 2 Points for a Win.

You got 1 Point for a Loss.

You got 1 Point for Pimpin'. And Pimpin' simply meant writing up your Game, tossing up some pictures, or even just adding an "Awesome Game!" to your opponents post... I was real lax with the pimp points.

We were playing Fortnightly, over 16 Weeks - so 8 Dates were Set.

After 4 Dates, I took the Main Kit, and rolled up some Random Numbers for Point Totals - 2 Dice Bags and 2 Token Sets, as well as one of Glad-II cards all went to Random people on that Draw.

After 8 Dates, the second Glad-II card went to "Most Wins".

The Shiny Medal went to "Most Points Overall".

Dice Bag + Token Set went to "Most Losses". (Which, me, as a TO, it went to - I spent far too many games not actually practicing)

And then last Dice Bag and Last Token Set went to Randoms as well.

Everyone who Registered for an X-Wing Card.

It was Flexible, it was open, it provided some reward for playing, it provided some reward if you weren't able to play that much.

Took me all of 5 minutes a week to troll the Facebook page and roll up the Excel Spreadsheet of Points....

We did a community-based league, where you had to play one league game with another league member, and report the result back to the organizer. The game could be wherever or whenever, as long as it happened within the week.

Thanks for the ideas everyone, and keep them coming! I'm giving myself a week to brainstorm before I propose this in our facebook group.

Thanks, looking forward to this!

[nipped for brevity, but I like the ideas!]

Edmon-osis. I like the way it rolls off the tongue, almost as easily as Genyosis...

I have decided we are Vantooine. :D

I'm eager to try this out. I'll see if I can get one of our FLGS's to agree to "sponsor".

I think this will be the key to ensuring an adequate amount of activity on an ongoing basis...

Thanks everyone, looking forward to more ideas!

200 point pick up games. =)

Here's our league document, and here's our league rules:

League rules are going to be fairly casual. Everyone that signs up will play everyone once, with league points being equal to the tournament points (once they are updated for 400 pts games). Games will be starting at the release of Wave 2, and be 400 pt lists, which you can change each game - there will be no faction requirements.

Reporting Results:

All results should be reported publicly to the Facebook group on the Scoreboard post that will be put up before the first game is played - or reported in person to either "Biggs" (me) or Dave - the League Officials - to make sure it is recorded properly. It is incumbent upon both players to ensure that the score is correct and factual, within a timely manner of one player posting the score. Standings will be posted at least weekly, in a separate post.

Length:

Length will be loosely determined by number of signups - as everyone needs to play one another at least once. There will be no hard cutoff - but it is incumbent upon the players to make an effort to play their games. If a player is significantly behind the remainder of the league in number games played they will be given a warning. If they find themselves unable to catch up in a timely manner, they will be asked to drop from the league. Players are encouraged to play like 19th century voters - early and often!

Playoffs:

The inaugural season playoff will work as follows: (tentative on signups)

1st Round

5th seed vs 8th seed

6th seed vs 7th seed

2nd Round

Highest Tournament Point Score vs 4th Seed

2nd Highest Tournament Point Score vs 3rd Seed

3rd Round

Highest Tournament Point Score of 2nd Round vs 2nd Seed

2nd Highest Tournament Point Score of 2nd Round vs 1st Seed

Final Round

Winners of 3rd Round

League Dues:

$20. Proceeds will go to prize support.

Prize Support:

Trophy for League Champion

Other Prizes TBD - Players must complete all their games to be eligible for league prizes.
