Armada officially dead?

Got to pick up on those trends!

I don't think it is dead or would be so soon, I think if anything it is just a bit slow to rise, most likely because of cost it may not being coming up well against X wings numbers. Still, tell me, is there anything more lovely then a sweet looking armada battle line ? For my money the hottest ship is the Imperial class Star Destroyer, been waiting a long time for a fleet battle game based on star wars to be able to use an ISD. Honestly just need to fill out the rebel side I have to make it awesome, I think I have most all of it I need for the empire.

Guess the game is dead. . . Only had 8 people show up to the store Friday night. . . Had 2 the month before. . . Must be dead. . .

Guess it could not of been me showing up every Friday, advertising, holding events. . . Yup. . . All dead.

I'm in with AngryAngel on fleet gaps. While I certainly won't say no to a few more Imperial designs, my Rebel forces are severely lacking in punch. I personally hate the Assault Frigate choice they made, and just don't feel right fielding more than one Home One. I don't mind the battle line of blockade runners, Nebs, fishies, and fighter wings, but it would be nice if I had more meat on the fleet backbone.

As I said elsewhere, I'd love to see the Carrack, Dreadnought, Strike Cruiser, NebB 2, heck even the Lancer! And I'd have no problem seeing them on the Rebel side. Not one of these designs strikes me as "Imperial aesthetics." They have the look of a random, rag-tag fleet make up that I just think looks more at home next to a Mon Cal cruiser.

No, not every Imperial ship needs to be an angry space triangle. But for me, it does need to "fit" their look.

"FFG have a fair number of games, each of which needs new expansions,"

NO I'm sorry games do NOT NEED expansions, or prize support. only some players need these things to feed their rush

for getting more and more new things " greed " "give me give me give me" " mine mine mine" "Ohh shiny" ;) These games that just keep adding more and more stuff to them do stop getting new players. because the cost of getting the game goes up with each new thing added. because lets face it, you need it all or most of it to be able to win Vs someone who has it all. At that point it stops growing and getting new players. Then new stuff stops coming out because sales have dropped. The give me crew stops playing, Then it stops being made. But the players that just enjoy playing will keep playing the game for years and years. seen it happen over and over with game after game. :(

Some do, including armada..... If we had just core sets for armada would it be a good game....no.......it would be very limiting and be stale and boring after a few months, it's only after wave two with all the expansions that it has become the truly complex game it love. Could you cram all you need into a single box to make armada all it could be without expansions.....Yes if you charged £500-£1000 for the box.

So no expansions, single box would have given us 1) a game with little depth and longevity or 2) a game so expensive no one would have purchased it.....

The use of Expansions is a good business model for a game that needs a lot of expensive components, that would be to expensive/ risky for a single product launch and cost so much for anyone to buy.

Prize support is a clever way to market a game and get people to keep investing their cash, which makes the games company money and allows it to develop new products for you to play....

Companies who make games are not a charities or government bodies, they need to make a profit and have a sustainable business model.

My question is where is the TIE-Defender, Lambda Shuttle, E-wing, and TIE-Phantom?

My question is where is the TIE-Defender, Lambda Shuttle, E-wing, and TIE-Phantom?

Minus the Lambda shuttle, in the bowels of the EU where they belong.

My question is where is the TIE-Defender, Lambda Shuttle, E-wing, and TIE-Phantom?

If they keep producing expansions then this type of stuff will eventually show up, but I doubt it'll be anytime soon. The game has way more squadron variety than it has ship variety right now, so the weakest link is the ship selection. In a perfect world I'd say 2 more waves of ship-only stuff and then maybe some more squadrons. However at that point it'd be likely for them to do Star Wars Rebels - based squadrons, so you might not get EU stuff for awhile.

I have been trying for a while to get more local people into Armada.
I will set up a table on X-Wing night to play with a friend (part time Armada guy). Lots of X-Wing players like to look....but no one willing to dive into it without a larger player base.

I am probably going to switch back to X-Wing for a while (no problem finding a game of that).

It is a pity....i really do prefer Armada.

My local group is a hybrid Armada/XWing group. I bought into XWing in order to look like I belong, but I have yet to play a game. Though only a few of us play Armada regularly or exclusively, we all try and talk up the game a whole bunch.

Honestly, it's just harder for new people to get into Armada. Price point, strategic thought, list building, just about everything but amount of product.

(And yes, before anyone gets salty, I know there is a spirited debate on tactics v. strategy and the merits of applying each to armada or xwing. I like both games, I'm just saying that many people feel overwhelmed when trying to get into Armada in a way I never was when learning how to play XWing)

I, personally, found Armada to be almost the Opposite there...

Learning how to Play X-Wing was simple. The rulebook was very straightforward, and really, that was what I needed to play.

What I didn't know then, and what I still don't know now, with X-Wing... Is where to Start ...

And even if I get where to start, I don't know where to continue to , without buying left-right-and-center willy nilly to try to build up a collection of cards, because the community is very welcoming to newcomers, but often, seems to be speaking another language when it comes to list design.

Wheras, with Armada... I got in on the Ground Floor. I learned as others were learning, and the clique and group built around me...

And yes, I still havn't made a purchase for X-Wing... because I just don't know where to start, and how much my initial investment will carry me before I find myself told I made the wrong choice and need to start again from scratch...

I feel like that was more what I was trying to say actually. The only reason I know where to go for XWing (not that i'm going anywhere in a hurry for XWing) is because I have friends who are literally holding my hand and offering to loan me cards so I know what works and what doesn't.

I started with a core armada set so I've been along for the ride. That's kind of what I meant though when I say that XWing is easy to get into in every way but amount of product.

They have what? 8 waves of expansions? More than 1 core set? Literally hundreds of upgrade cards?

All I'm saying is it's just as hard for them to get into Armada as it is for us to get into XWing :)

And our ships cost 2-3x as much as theirs.

Plus we speak another language too. I just played against a guy who was a long term XWing player who decided to sacrifice his livelihood (and probably marriage) by buying 2 of every Armada product just a few weeks ago.

Then I started telling him about XI7s and officers of various degrees and his eyes kind of glazed over. Then I blew his mind with a TRCSD-II with Needa.

It's nice being around for a game from its release. We take so much for granted haha

Exactly my sentiments. It is much better for me to experience Armada from the beginning and roll with the new ships/rules/metas/etc. than to dive into Wave 8 of X-Wing. The ships are SO cool for X-Wing but it is daunting - in the amount of money and stuff there already is to invest there.

My question is where is the TIE-Defender, Lambda Shuttle, E-wing, and TIE-Phantom?

I can help you with this easily if you would like. Pm me if interested. I may be able to dig up the link I found that got me on the right track initially.

The key is just getting a few already premium tournament tested builds and move from there. I got in on wave 7 and the method worked well. While I bought everything and then the extra cards I knew I would need like push the limit, engine upgrades, turbo thrusters, etc. I started just picking out of the collection others premade builds.

thx for the picture!

not getting tired of repeating it, the game is not complete without the Defender, soooo looking forward to it, personally. Happy with the flotillas for now, though.

Getting in right at the beginning is huge. Has a ton of advantages and builds camaraderie with everyone else who is in the same boat.

As far as X-Wing goes, I have some videos on my channel if you want to get started. I've made several "What to buy first when on a budget", including rebel, imperial, and scum versions - because you are probably gonna wanna stick with just 1 faction at first when starting a game like that.

Long story short - get The Force Awakens core set. Then either Rebel/Imperial Aces, or the original core set, and then maybe a large ship like the Millennium Falcon or a Decimator. (Or the new Ghost, which is awesome!). That's a good starting point and you'll have some flexibility in lists and be competitive.

Problem is for me, absolutely none of those ships actually grab me as wanting to play at all, so I'm just unenthusiastic ... Honestly, so far, the only thing I've felt I've wanted to do is (re) paint a Firespray and Z-95s as Kath and her Binyare Pirates... Because I spent a bunch of time doing that for Armada...

Ok to play a standard 100 point game with that in mind you could get away with a Force Awakens Core Set, Slave 1 expansion, and 2 Most Wanted packs. That'll get you a list like this:

Kath Scarlet (Scum) (38)

Veteran Instincts (1)

Seismic Charges (2)

Gunner (5)

Binayre Pirate (12)

"Hot Shot" Blaster (3)

Binayre Pirate (12)

Binayre Pirate (12)

There are plenty of other configuration options as well with just those purchases, and that should run you $112.46 on coolstuff's website right now, (that'd also be free shipping since it's over 100).

Might be a pretty cool list too!

That won't be free shipping because Free Shipping is US Only and I am in Canada :D (I got burned on this for Wave-2 stuff)

I do already own a basic core set, minus Ships and Pilots , but does have the upgrades...

But this is something for X-Wing. Not for Armada. :D

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, X-wing does not appeal to me. Two reasons:

1) Green Dice - I understand that it is more thematically appropriate, but my ability to survive shouldn't be reliant on luck as it is in that game. I like the token resource management of Armada over fickle green dice.

2) Turn-rates - I don't think that there is enough variation in turning radius in the game. Bank and Hard-turn isn't enough variation for me to feel like I have enough of a nuanced control of my fighter.

Meh.

Ah... the perennial problem of having lots of people saying "If more people did this I would join in."

I miss Fickle. . .

I am in total agreement. The game feels boring to me. It is easy to roughly predict where people will be after armada. As such the game comes down more to your build more than anything else and after playing 40k for so long I am tired of Codex/Expansion creep.
