Damage Questions

When dealing damage in this game I have 2 questions.

1) Do you deal extra damage on a successful hit for EVERY success you will that is uncanceled or only every success that is beyond the 1 success needed to hit?

2) Do you get any kind of a strength bonus to damage when hitting with a melee weapon?

Every success, and if the weapon is listed as +#, then you add your Brawn to the damage.

Every success, and if the weapon is listed as +#, then you add your Brawn to the damage.

So I have been wrong in the way I read the damage for weapons? It says 'each net success' so I took that to mean each success rolled beyond the 1 success you need to hit.

I read it to mean 'each success' period so in theory if you hit at all you will net damage equal to the weapon damage plus 'at least 1'.

Just referenced my copy of the EoE core book and on pg. 205, Step 3 of Perform a Combat Check states "for every uncanceled success..." (cross checked with AoR pg. 217, identical wording). So by this statement, yes, your original way is incorrect BTB. However, if that's been working for you and yours, why change?

On pg 165 of Force & Destiny under the 'Base Damage' heading it states "The base damage the weapon inflicts. This is the minimum damage inflicted if the attack with this weapon hits. Each NET success generated during the attack check adds one point of damage to this base damage rating."

This clearly makes it sound like it is every success beyond the first because it says "net success" but in the combat chapter it makes it sound like it is every success.

Asked and answered question. Total number of uncancelled successes are added to base damage. A complete wash of no successes or failures showing is a failure.

Net = Gross (total) successes rolled less total failures rolled.

You get used to adding one to all damage stats when seeing how much damage a weapon does.

This has been answered by the Devs several times. I agree that it's a little unclear in the book. The bottom line is that a weapon will very rarely do it's base damage, since each uncancelled success adds +1 to damage.

In certain cases (Reflect, Parry, others) there will be a need for a hit to do "base" damage. This damage is without any successes and usually in response to something else and done out of turn.

So, as a general rule, when a player is actively attacking, the rule is generally add all successes (after balancing failures) to the damage. When acting out of turn or as a reaction without an attack roll, utilize the listed number only.

The Burn quality uses base damage, as an example. In most cases, though, the minimum damage you'll be doing on a successful check is base + 1.
