Ship Timelines? When were they made?

By RodianClone, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Does anyone have a timeline for when different starships and freighters were made? It would be nice to know for my "starship in the glacier" backstory.

If you want a safe bet, just use one from the Old Republic times...

Quite a few of the ships in this setting are mentioned as being circa the Battle of Naboo, or right before, during, or after the Clone Wars. Some are even older. So a lot of the models clock in at around 20+ years, with some hitting 50+ (I'm thinking the Barloz and the YT-1300 are in this category). But I'd take Oddball's advice and just hop over to LibrariaNPC's freighter thread and pick one from the Old Republic. The Dynamic-class, the Class VI, and the XS light freighter are all thousands of years old, and could work.

How about Skywatcher, ZH-25 Questor, Loronar and YV 560? I know YG 410 are more than old enough!.. I don`t really need that old, just from my character`s childhood and he is about thirty, so at least 15 to 20 years minimum, as he and his friends discovered their very own secret starship in the ice and it became their hideout and they made a pact to someday fly away and see space together and all that good stuff.... All before the Betrayal(obligation)..

Wookieepedia has a little blurb about the Era in the sidebar for most of those ships. Strangely, the Essential Guide to Vehicles and Vessels doesn't contain such information.

I have seen the blurb.. But I don`t know if the ships I know from the rebel era are old enough.

It's impossible for me to tell in context. However, I believe they denote era of operation and not necessarily when they were built. I agree, that would be a collection of data I'd like to see!

Well, not everything is exactly dated. The Questor is a successor to the Z-10 Seeker, which succeeded the Pathfinder-class, but there aren't exactly dates on all of them, and all three are still in operation. The Barloz-class predates the YT-series by some time, but is still active. The YT-1300 is, according to Wookieepedia, over 70 years old (72 BBY). The 1300 is the eighth such model in the YT-series that we know of. So some of these active ship classes could be over a century old.

As far as the ships mentioned, the Skywatcher is an Imperial ship, right? So it's not that old, probably; I'd say no more than a decade. I don't have a clue about the Questor or the YV-560, and I don't know which Loronar you're talking about.

It really doesn't matter. I mean I'm not trying to mean or anything, but that's kind of how it is. With the EU pretty much wiped out, and even then they didn't really get into when ships were made except for the general era. But it's your game. If you say this was made 150 years ago for the first time, then that is how it is for your universe. I understand trying to hold true to the lore, but not fret over the little stuff. If your players say WHAAAA!?!??! Just tell them to deal with it. Again, I'm not saying this in a "jerk" tone, just as a matter fact. Just, dude, do what you have to do, and have fun!

I am the player in this case. Not a big deal, would just be nice to know..

Oh, well, for your character, the same kind implies. I have been into Star Wars my entire life, I was born in '75, and started playing the SW RPG around '88-'89. I have never seen anything where anyone ever really came out with a detailed listing of when ships were produced. Some sources said the YT-1300 were ancient and rare, others said they were just kind of old, but really common. And the listings just kept getting more vauge really. About all we got were "this ship was common during the time of Xim the Despot" which at that time like around 10,000 years before ANH. Then we got the prequels, and stuff just kept getting more confused. So yeah, just go with it dude. Nothing is really set in stone about when anything was invented, made, or discovered. So get creative, and have some fun with it.

I like vague!:D That gives me lots of room for creativity. I just didn't want it to be a too new ship for my backstory and find out later.. A fiction where not only the canon have been changing, but even the original movies have made me nervous. . Well, not really, but my gm might care more about canon than me. Canon shmanon!

The thing with Star Wars is, that things have to be really old to be "old".

The YT-1300 is over 70 years old in design and still one of the most common ships in the galaxy during the EotE time.
In relative terms, it would be like driving a 2013 or 2014 car today.

If you want old, you'll need really old.

This also means that that ship in the ice could be pretty much anything you want it to be, since even "new" ships are usually pretty old in star wars, and could definately have been in that ice for over 20 years.

I know, that is one of the things I love about Star Wars and the Sience Fantasy genre! Or many fantasy sub-genres in general. That technology has little to do with developement and more to do with society and culture. How it works in the real world has nothing to do with how it is on Middle-Earth or the Galaxy at all. Technology in these stories is static and that is that, it`s just another set piece, a backdrop and a tool.

Two of the ships I looked at, that another player wanted, was described as relatively new and the other one, a newcommer to the freighter market, so I just wanted to see if anyoone knew. I love the fact that the "new" starships can be 100 years old and the old ones can be thousands.

And things keep changing too. For about the longest time, the A-Wing and B-Wing were the newest premier fighters in the world of Star Wars at the time of Return of the Jedi! They were brand and just developed. It was like that since 1983 until oh, let's, see about 2015... Now they are old and are in Rebels!!! Well the B-wing is just kind a special project some looney Mon Cal made, but still... Before it was made by the Verpine and Ackbar. So things keep changing man. It's just how it is. Oh, well. Either we except it as fans, or just walk away. For me, while I'm not ultra happy about this change, in the grand scheme it really doesn't matter, and has no effect on my game, or my fandom. So, it is what it is, and I'm willing to accept changes if it means new content. Better than leaving everything how it was, and not getting anything new!! LOL. So don't worry about trying to make everything fit, it never will. And yeah, the Falcon, yep, that Falcon was in the Prequels on Courscant too! I think Ep II, maybe III.

Personally I think there is too much unnecessary canon in Star Wars. Some fans want every little, unimportant detail to have a canonical explanation, every unnamed background character a backstory. To me, that ruins the mystery and wonder of the universe and might even take away some of the fan creativity. I love that facts that there are alot of info about lots of interesting stuff, but to me it shouldn`t have tp be canon to be cool and interesting. The main plot and characters need canon, not everything else. But if they have already established something about the ships in the movies or other canonical work, it sucks to go back on that. But still not as bad as going back and changing beloved classics! How do you think people would react if they did that to the Godfather, Cassablanca or Schindler`s List, and tried to ban all sales and distrubition of the originals. Don`t think most fans would put up with that.

Yeah, generally speaking timelines of ships are kept purposely vague, that it's almost better sticking to eras then ships.

Z-95's, Y-wings and most frigates belong to pre-clone wars era and have been around for some time.

The really new ships are modern era. namely fighter aircraft.

The really, really old ships predate both.

Basically, for your character pick a ship. Have a quick look, if it dates back to the clonewars, it's probably fine to have a history. The Falcon for example belonged to Lando as a personal vessel, but probably belonged to countless people before him, he mainly picked it because "it looked shabby enough to overlook."

Hell there's a whole Legends novel which is basically a framing story and the story of the Falcon before Lando got it.

Is the intent that the ship in the glacier be the character groups starting ship?

If not, why not just make a ship up?

Sure, but me and my brother got to choose our starting ship and wanted one we both like and one that would work for the third player too. One of the things I wanted, was for the ship to fit my backstory, since we found that ship orgin most interesting.

We ended up with the G9 Rigger and that is more than old enough:) It is limited and flawed in some ways and really fits the starting out in Edge of the Empire feeling :) Also, it is fun to have three huge characters in a smaller ship :D

I was going to recommend the YG-4210 since the fluff states it is an old design that still pops up sometimes due to its popularity. The G9 is a pretty solid choice. I really like that origin story idea, I might need to borrow it as an origin story for the future or maybe an adventure seed.
