SWG brought me here

By Dett Starley, in X-Wing

We few, we remember. The glory, the triumphs, the all too brief time in the light, only to be eclipsed by the most worthy of rivals, the TIE Defender. Oh, where is the Action Fleet Gunboat? Where is the micro machine? Where is the Gunboat plushy? Lego?

Just because there's no official kit doesn't mean it can't be done.

Let that be a warning, FFG. The fandom will find a way... the fandom always finds a way...

It was the last for me...

I sunk so many hours into this game, it was unhealthy!.. never again....

Ditto, I miss it, I don't miss being so committed. However, I didn't think they would take my ships from me.

So much time spent on SWG, loved the space combat with all the fantastic ships - can see them doing a lot of the Freelancer ships in X-Wing

Will people stop remind me of Firefly! It put me downs for a week to remember that there will never be a second season.... :(

I love these topics. I love showing off my TIE Aggressors!

In one of the recent podcasts, devs mentioned being very close to caught up on current Star Wars ships...

Not sure how to take that.

Does that mean it is time to go for less iconic ships? Or something more sinister? I DON'T KNOW.

I understand our level of fandom has varying depths .. but I argue we haven't seen an iconic ship since the aces packs.

In this community, yes, we are fans. We have had exposure to the various media in which we experienced these ships and maybe have some attachment to them. Iconic though? I argue that the iconic ships are Falcon, X-Wing, TIE, etc. Your average SW fan isn't going to recognise anything from Wave 8 .. unless they've seen Rebels. Regardless, I wouldn't call the Ghost iconic.

Heck, I'd even argue there has been nothing iconic since Wave 4.

But then again, it really depends on our definition of the word.

I'm torn with the Gunboat. I understand it played a big part in the X-Wing and TIE Fighter games .. but it doesn't feel imperial. It's design is a huge jump from the Imp style.

Even if we take a step back to the larger ships. The Decimator has the hexagonal viewport and SD inspired triangular shape. It fits the Imperial style. The Gunboat doesn't.

I understand that viewpoint, but I can't agree with it.

The Empire is mich more than just Sienar's TIE series, or Kuat's Star Destroyers for that matter.

The Assault Gunboat is and extension and evolution of Cygnus Spaceworks Imperial Shuttle; it follows the same aesthetic and design principles, and like the Shuttle it fills a niche that Sienar's TIE series couldn't.

The Empire's strength is in uniformity, but that doesn't mean everything needs to be exactly the same.

M3A interceptor is from galaxies too isnt it

So is Talonbane Cobra.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nv36Hatr4qs

The ship in the still looks like a YV-666.... Why isn't Talonbane a pilot on it???? lol

X-wing combined with Imperial Assault boarding action is the reason why I initially started with IA.

I am a big fan of the X-Wing and Tie Fighter series and I believe many fellow X-wing players are as well.

Therefore, we should have the Assault Gunboat as it is a beautiful kick ass starfighter.

And we should have the Assault Gunboat BEFORE all the prequel crap comes out.

My 2 cents.

I dislike any ship with the word "boat" in the name. But then, I've never seen it in action.

Oh sweet summer child, let me take you back to a time when the Internet barely trickled into your home on screeching modems, when floppy discs were still bought by the non-ironic, in the days before Y2K when you can get a C: prompt and have it mean something. In those dark, distant days came a series of games that put the player in the cockpit of many starfighters in an experience that brought Star Wars into the minds and hearts of a generation that had witnessed the true Dark Timea when the world had forgotten of the Jedi and droids and wookiees. And in these games came an unlikely star, an unassuming starfighter that has gone unrecognized by the fandom for far too long.....

GUNBOAT!

The Cygnus Spaceworks Alpha-class xg-1 'Starwing' Assault Gunboat.

The first new Star Wars starfighter in a decade. A ship worthy of the Empire and its elite pilots. A terror when it first appeared in X-wing, it became a favorite of many in TIE Fighter. The 'Boat.

We few, we remember. The glory, the triumphs, the all too brief time in the light, only to be eclipsed by the most worthy of rivals, the TIE Defender. Oh, where is the Action Fleet Gunboat? Where is the micro machine? Where is the Gunboat plushy? Lego? Don't make me laugh. No, GUNBOAT has endured in our dreams despite over 2 decades of no recognition or imortalization in consumer products for we carry GUNBOAT in our souls.

And we will not rest until GUNBOAT has her due.

Never give up, never surrender. GUNBOAT!

Ahem, preacher!

Doesn't feel imperial? The Lambda would like to have some words with you.

I've only ever played a handful of MMOs, but never more than 2 at a time.

Started out playing Everquest. Started SWG when it came out. Started playing WoW instead of EQ. Played City of Heroes for awhile.

WoW is the only one I still play.

Shuttle_CHRON.jpg

Haha, you are correct. If the Lambda was gifted with the art of speech (like Robin Hobb's Liveship traders) he/she would have words.

Lambda Epsilon: "Wow, space sure is vast hey!?"

Lambda Omicron: "Holy moly, a talking Lambda!"

I considered the Lambda as a similarly designed vessel however, was challenged by the following: Aesthetically they share some similarities but the design space almost stops there. Shuttles were built primarily to transport cargo and passengers. They had lasers and shields yes, but they were for more of a defensive role to protect the cargo.

Gunboats were built purely for combat. They had ever upgrade imaginable (lasers, ion, missiles, shields, tractor beam, hyperspace capability).

The Lambda defined Imperial Shuttle design. Kylo's for example reflects some of the design features of the Lambda. TIEs define the Imp fighter classes as demonstrated by the various iterations of the design. Just like the Falcon defined what a smuggler's ship looks like (Dash's freighter, Azameen's freighter).

The SW universe has given us certain design elements so that we can easily identify the role and affiliation of the ship. The Gunboat does not fit in this model.

TIE Shuttle? TIE Boarding craft?

The TIE design aesthetic can be used when designing craft for many different roles, some not even related to combat. Likewise the 'Cygnus' aesthetic can be used in other craft besides transports and shuttles, namely a multirole assault fighter like he Starwing, which was shown to be participating in a planetary invasion in the first cut scene of X-wing; conspicuously absent, the TIE Bomber, a craft that should have been used during bombing runs on the surface of the planet...instead we have a winged ship similar to the Lambda, another winged craft that operates in atmosphere and lands on planetary surfaces.

Make of it what you will.
