U-Boat???

Surely its more crazy to call something after its shape with a name for a definite role.

If it cloaked i'd get it.

Otherwise its just a ship that can carry a torpedo.

If you're going to use a WWII analogy badly, as you are at the mo, then Stuka actually fits more than 'submarine' if we're honest.

Jumpmasters are shaped like the letter U. They are ships. Uboat makes sense.

Wolfpack also makes sense: Three "uboats" on one list.

Wolfpacks were also used by American submarines in the Pacific - in deliberate imitation of the Kriegsmarine.

I learned that about two decades ago, in elementary school - probably third or fourth grade.

But you could argue they look a bit like 'c' shapes too. U boat where not called u boats because of their shape were they, they were called it because it was an abrieviation of 'unter see boot', the U referring to its ability to hide underwater not its profile.

I am well aware what the 'u' stood for in 'u-boat'.

However: Stukas are not shaped like Cs. And the u-boat (and submarines in general) typically performed the same mission that had been historically performed by torpedo boats, but using stealth to approach their targets rather than speed.

And if we're making the aircraft comparison, Jumpmasters are more like TBF/TBM Avengers than Ju-87s.

There's no reason why Jumpmasters - especially those equipped and intended for combat - might not be known colloquially in universe as "u boats". There's also no reason why a group of "u boats" (Jumpmasters) might not be known colloquially in universe as "wolfpacks".

As the original german is rudeltaktik - "pack tactics" - it is a tactic and not a specific name. Thus, you might appropriately call a group of TIE Phantoms a wolfpack. But given that the TIE Phantom doesn't fit Imperial doctrine, that it's production numbers were extremely limited, and the limited use that the Empire would have for TIE Phantoms using wolfpack tactics, especially when compared to numbers and proliferation of Jumpmasters and the usefulness of a group of small ships for engaging large ships for mercenaries, rebels, and pirates, it is far more likely for wolfpack tactics, in universe, to be associated with ships like the Jumpmaster.

Using terms like "u boat" and "wolfpack" for this purpose is simply doing was Star Wars does so much: Quoting history.

Arguing about how the terms "u boat" and "wolfpack" are inappropriate in universe because the Jumpmaster doesn't fit the tactical role of a historical Unterseeboot so much as that of a dive bomber (!) or torpedo bomber (better) is like complaining about the use of the term Grand Army of the Republic because neither the French nor American GARs used clones or starships.

ETA: And now I'm wondering about how a wolfpack-themed mission or game might go: A transport and its escorts on one side, the wolfpack on the other. Each individual ship of the wolfpack is assigned a number and dice are rolled to determine which ship in the wolfpack finds the transport and its escorts and starts the game in play, with the remainder of the wolfpack entering the game at random from random directions. The wolfpack outnumbers the transport and its escorts and has a higher point value.
Transport convoy:
Primary objective: Move the transport safely off the table (simulating an escape into hyperspace).
Secondary objective: Destroy more than half the wolfpack.
Wolfpack:
Primary objective: Destroy the transport.
Secondary objective: Destroy the escorts.

My mother taught me not to argue with children...

If I was going to be honest with you, I would probably get a report from the moderators, so I will leave it at that.

I did not know you were an aficionado on all things WW 2, It is called the Imperial Navy, not the Imperial Air/Star force, so if we are being honest... U Boat sits a lot better than Stuka...
