Ok, well it should be familiar to y'know, actual wargamers as opposed to some random person off the street.
The WWE (or was it WWF at the time) connection doesn't make sense so can be dismissed.

Potty Time?
That's what I've been calling them.
So wait. You guys are telling me that if you walk up to a random person on the street and ask what the wolf pack was, you think the majority of them will know that it's a collection of German submarines from WWII? You're fooling yourselves.
It might not be an obscure reference to someone interested in military history, but that doesn't make it one of the most widely known WWII references.
As applied to X-wing, if you told a brand new player that you fly the wolf pack, you expect them to first understand this is a WWII reference, not an X-wing reference. Then they'll realize you must be referring to a collection of U-boats. And that they will then reverse engineer the logic that jumpmasters with this one specific build (or variant) could be referred to as a U-boat because it is shaped like a U and uses torpedoes. Then they'll quickly add up the points in their head and realize you can fit 3 in a list.
So you'll say wolf pack and after a few seconds they'll go, "ohh, you must mean 3 jumpmasters featuring torpedoes. Clever."
That's one theory. A much better one is that they'll start a thread like this one because they're confused.
Some context is required yes... If I walk up to a random person on the street, and ask then what a Uboat is, they're either gonna say they dont know or they'll remember that one reference in history class years ago.
Wolfpack perfectly describes the list. 3 uboats with torpedoes that hunt as a pack and destroy enemies.
This is one of the greatest things Ive seen all day/week/month
Wolfpack is a quite established name in things connected to war/wargames. Wolf-PACK also should quite obviously make clear that LONE wolf cannot be in it.
(OT: actually in GW's Manowar there was an unofficial "wolfpack" named squad of 3 submarines, and nobody confused it with the officially existing but unnamed group of 3 wolfships).
You are right in that not everyone gets the Uboat reference to the cheapest jumpmaster.
BUT: I started in these forum round wave5-6, mainly due to the painting/modding sub ☺ forum. And the first week I was quite confused about all the offhand strange abbreviations and nicknames used here. Wtf are they talking about...
Wolfpack imho is not further off then many others.
Edit: spellcheck, oriiginal post made on a mobile device
Edited by ManagarmrWolfpack isn't necessarily any further off than any others but I don't really see the point in trying to establish a nickname for any list. I've never seen a nickname that cuts down confusion. And usually multiple people come up with the same list and try to stamp it with their own nickname. Then I see them going around on every relevant thread trying to get everyone else to use the same name.
For instance, I've seen the name "Bounty Bros" to refer to any and every combination of 2 large scum ships with the bounty hunter pilots. Whether it's Boba+IG, Boba+Bossk, Bossk+IG, Dengar+Bossk, or whatever, they've ALL been referred to as "Bounty Bros". So not only is the name ambiguous in the first place, but the confusion of many people trying to claim ownership of it renders it completely meaningless.
Instead of using Wolfpack and insisting that new players need to brush up on their WWII history if they want to play X-wing, why don't we just call it triple jumpmasters, in the same vain as dual IGs, or quad TLTs?
Part of the appeal of this game, and a big reason it is so successful, is the accessibility of the rules. Getting people hooked on an easy the game and then handing them a constantly revised glossary of colloquiums to try to navigate the online community seems to only make things unnecessarily complicated.

Anyone that made it through high school knows about WWII and the U-boats. They might not know about the Wolf Pack, but after reading this thread they will. Then they'll be all caught up.
'Wolf Pack' is no harder to remember than 'Doom Shuttle'.
Dual IGs is 'BroBots'.
I have no idea what 'Panic Attack' is but I know it's a rebel stress list.
'Bounty Bros' to me would be any of the bounty hunters from the movies in a list together. So I know it's a non-generic scum list.
'Biggs walks the dogs'? There are no dog ships... but we all know what the list is.
The 'Stresshog' is evil.
This isn't 'Fat Han':

The important thing is for anyone that doesn't understand the terminology someone is using to ask questions. They'll explain it, then you'll know and remember it... or enough of it to understand what they're talking about through context. And they'll never expect you to use their shorthand terminology if you don't want to.
But for them it is shorthand, and using simple language to convey complex ideas is the point.
Stresshog, or y-wing with specific astromech and title and turret... I know which one I'd rather say.
That said, calling crits 'kabooms' does grind my gears every time I read it.
Someone needs to photoshop three Wullf Yularens into a single photo so we can have a true 'Wullfpack'

the term u-boat comes from the german phrase : untersee boot, spelled with an umlaut over the second o in boot so it sounds like bo-ote. the phrase translates to under sea boat.

All of this. Or at least most it. ![]()
If you see slang, abbreviations, or other identifiers you don't know just ask. Everyone once in awhile someone will throw up some WTF letter combination that is rarely seen here and be asked what it means by those who have been on these forums a long time. While we may think we can be 100% fluent in a given language there are still variations in that language which are likely to give a person trouble. Around here it helps to be able to speak "X-Wing" which is a combination of StarWars, gaming, and who knows how many more subsets of the English language.
That "most of it" is that I fully support the use of kaboom to describe the open explosion symbols. A case of too many things sharing the same words which can lead to plenty of confusion. Just look at all the problems that come up when "hit" is discussed.

This forum really needs custom emoticons for the evade, boom, kaboom and eye symbols. Then we wouldn't need to spell them out.

I think I've seen some in posts from time to time but they really aren't something that is easy to find for anyone even with a full keyboard and such instead of some mobile device.

I mean like built in. So you could just type :boom: and get the hit symbol etc.

I forget who made those links, but the result is completely customized images.
Change the letters after the = to the results you want to see.. 3 crits and a hit = ccch (or chcc,
, etc). B is blank, E for evade and F for focus.
Jumpmasters are shaped like the letter U. They are ships. Uboat makes sense.
Wolfpack also makes sense: Three "uboats" on one list.
Wolfpacks were also used by American submarines in the Pacific - in deliberate imitation of the Kriegsmarine.
I learned that about two decades ago, in elementary school - probably third or fourth grade.

That would be awesome if it worked that way.
There are plenty of other things that can be called a Wolf Pack.
That group of large canines in the field outside my window certainly be called a wolf pack.
The fans of a certain MN based professional Basketball team may use that name.
I seem to recall a group of lounge singer or something like that getting that name as well.
Actually im glad this thread came up as i couldnt understand why they were called uboats or wolf pack in this game as i was looking for cloaking options.
My 'wolfpack' list was three generic phantoms with various upgrades, far more actually like a real uboat wolf pack.
This list seems more like a 'stuka' list... alpha strike frightening ordnance droppers that are not too manouverable but have adequate MG coverage! ![]()

Stukas drop bombs, U Boats fire torpedos. pretty much sums it up.

But you could argue they look a bit like 'c' shapes too. U boat where not called u boats because of their shape were they, they were called it because it was an abrieviation of 'unter see boot', the U referring to its ability to hide underwater not its profile.

Not true, Stukas could also drop torpedos. The 87c was designed to do just that. They also had anti tank cannons on later models.
Stuka is far more appropriate for the role.

We should be ashamed of ourselves, using 70 year old military terms.
It's clearly not possible to aqquire basic knowledge of major historical events at an early age. Obviously German tactics belong to the same branch of esoteric knowledge restricted from the common mans understanding as Masonic handshakes and quantum mechanics. We should obviously dumb down our parlance thus preventing people ignorant of some matters from being motivated to investigate.Jumpmasters are shaped like the letter U. They are ships. The first effective self propelled torpedo was invented in 1866, should we call it something else to fit in with your crazy ideas that we only use modern terminology?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torpedo
Squadron - mid 16th century (originally denoting a group of soldiers in square formation): from Italian squadrone, from squadra ‘square’. Should we get the people who develop the squadron builders to call it something else?
What a ridiculous thing to say we should be ashamed of ourselves for using terminology that was used in living memory. You try to bamboozle us with language, but to bring your point short, understanding something in history that cost over 55 million people their lives should be something we all should know so we never repeat the same mistakes.

Ju 88's could also be used as guided missiles, but it isn't what they were known for.

It seems crazy to me, and maybe to others that you insist that a boat/ship that fires torpedoes as its preferred attack should be called the Stuka Wing or something equally crazy. Maybe the Dagger squadron ships could be called Stukas because the JU 87G had cannons, or maybe the Heavy Scyk could be called it for the same reasons.
