U-Boat???

By shaner, in X-Wing

Just a quickie...

Read mention of a U-Boat. What is it? Search turned up nadda.

Thanks

Contracted Scout pilot in Jumpmaster 5000 with Deadeye, R4 Agromech, Extra Munitions, Proton Torpedoes, Guidance Chips. 3 of which is the Wolf Pack. Capable munitions alpha strikers, basically.

I belive it's the jumpmaster with proton torps, extra munitions, and guidance chips

It's mostly just the generic Jumpaster 5000 pilot with Deadeye, Extra Munitions, Guidance Chip, and some sort of Torpedo. The variations are out there.

It's good because it's a cheap generic that has an EPT to get Deadeye. That means you use a Focus and don't have to pick your target. It's a cheap ship that has a lot of hull to chew through. It can dish out some damage quite early.

It's called U-boat because....the ship is actually shaped like a U and it uses Torpedoes (referencing old WW I-II German submarines).

Awesome guys...thanks.

So people are liking this Ship / system? How effecting would the "Wolf Pack" be? Anyone using it??

A Contracted Scout with Deadeye, R4 Agromech, Guidance Chips, Extra Munitions, Proton Torpedoes/Plasma Torpedoes. 34/33 points.

There are also things you could add or take away like Feedback Array or some of the 1 point Scum Bounty Hunter crews.

A nice 32 point version is Contracted Scout with Deadeye, Overclocked R4, Guidance Chips, Extra Munitions, and Plasma Torpedoes. Run one of these and 2 Proton Torpedo U-Boats, it's probably the optimal U-Boat list IMO.

There is this thread titled "3 Scouts" that is all about it:

https://community.fantasyflightgames.com/topic/205342-the-3-scouts/

There have been a couple reports of people winning Store Championships with 2 Scouts and 1 other ship. One was even Serrissu.

A lot of people are bemoaning it and saying it's too hard. Personally, I hope it helps to drive tournament lists into being something more than just 3 ships. I don't have 3, but haven't gotten a game in with the 1 that I do have due to family. I was hoping to last night, but no.

I'm looking forward to Dengar as I think he will be fun. I don't care too much about "tournament level games", but I will have fun with it.

"Triple Toilet Seat" is a much better name for it.

Awesome guys...thanks.

It's effective right now simply because of lack of experience playing against anything like it. There hasn't really been anything that can consistently hit as hard or last as long in all of x-wing before it, so it catches people off guard. While I think it will remain a solid list, some of it's effectiveness will die down once the new wears off.

I'm fine with U-boats as a little nickname for them, but I really dislike the "Wolfpack" squad name.

A nickname for a ship that has a fairly long list of upgrades makes some sense. Creating a nickname for a squad with a relatively obscure historical reference based on a nickname for a ship is pretty far into the weeds.

But I'm not really a fan of squad names in general. After 8 waves and with 3 factions there are enough combinations of ships that trying to establish a universal cutesy nickname seems to cause more confusion about what's in it, rather than less. For instance, if someone sees Wolfpack bandied about, they might reasonably assume lone wolf is featured in the list.

How is that an obscuse reference? Anyone who has read anything about WWII will have heard that term in connection with U-boats. If you know what a U-boat is a refernce to, you should know the connection to "wolfpack".

Pretty much has an alpha strike that does 4 damage because you have a target lock and guidance Gimps. Deadey means you dont have to use a target lock to shoot and use R4 to get a TL after you spend your focus to shoot the torps. Because you have 3 Scouts you can waste some aces or low Agi ships with Focus fire.

Downside is you need to be in arc to shoot the torps, upside as people have already mentioned, not a lot of experience flying against the toilet seats of doom at the moment.

I played my first game against and the after with them last night (only 1 in each match). What I noticed both times was the agility affored by the dial of the ship. Combined with the barrel roll, the Jumpmaster can dance around the board.

Ships that use torpedoes to destroy their enemies is about as U-Boat as you get, and as people have already stated, the collective noun for a group of U-Boats was called a Wolfpack. If you don't like it, better get in your time machine and tell 1940.

I like calling it the Triple Toilet Seats personally.

Calling it Wolfpack just make it sounds cool, but I refuse to give players any more incentive to run it.

:D

As people have pointed out - "wolfpack" to refer to a fleet of u-boats is probably one of the best known world war 2 references out there.

It's right up there with "not a lot of people know Hitler was Austrian", which literally everyone knows.

More importantly, and on-topic - If you're confused about a list because of the nickname someone has given it, have a look at their ships and cards, remove all doubt.

If you're still confused, then I dunno... Play draughts?

Wolfpack = 3 holer = family sized outhouse?

Im far from the oldest playing this game at 39... and wolfpack isnt obscure.

Wolfpack perfectly describes the list. 3 uboats with torpedoes that hunt as a pack and destroy enemies.

if you dont like it, fine, but others can name their lists whatever they like.

Yeah, but we had things like arcade games called "Wolfpack" that helped keep it in the public mind. Also, closer to WWII and little things like that were still sticking around.

I was reading some of the other thread on 3 Scout list and it's at least 18 pages at this point. They have talked a lot and gone through a lot of good ideas with it in that thread. I've even heard them call it the "Bumpmaster 5000", which is hysterical and insightful to me.

Personally, I hope it shifts the meta around a bit...especially if it's away from a 3 ship meta. Or at least it will lure some people away from 4 x TLT's and Palp Aces.

Underwater boat.

There's a big problem with that image. Only TWO of the ships are legal; the other is an obvious fraud.

I dunno, a well flown PalpAces is actually a nice counter to U-BOATS...at least in my limited experience with the list. YMMV.

If it's for the delivery of torpedoes, the Triple Toilet Seat is also a very apt name for. Perhaps moreso, given the stereotypical gamer diet...

So wait. You guys are telling me that if you walk up to a random person on the street and ask what the wolf pack was, you think the majority of them will know that it's a collection of German submarines from WWII? You're fooling yourselves.

It might not be an obscure reference to someone interested in military history, but that doesn't make it one of the most widely known WWII references.

As applied to X-wing, if you told a brand new player that you fly the wolf pack, you expect them to first understand this is a WWII reference, not an X-wing reference. Then they'll realize you must be referring to a collection of U-boats. And that they will then reverse engineer the logic that jumpmasters with this one specific build (or variant) could be referred to as a U-boat because it is shaped like a U and uses torpedoes. Then they'll quickly add up the points in their head and realize you can fit 3 in a list.

So you'll say wolf pack and after a few seconds they'll go, "ohh, you must mean 3 jumpmasters featuring torpedoes. Clever."

That's one theory. A much better one is that they'll start a thread like this one because they're confused.
