Shapeways

Is it weird I just want to buy several freighters just to randomly move around the battlefield to act like traffic?

Maybe its the inner child in me wishing I could play TIE fighter again... :(

Oh! Maybe a space station to replace the lame-o flat cardboard one from the core set!

Rescaunt destroyers...make a nice mc30

Actually. . . An AI for in system traffic/convoy. . . Hmmmm

Now I think I'm going to do something different... Maybe try and figure out a way to incorporate usIng one of the dice into determining which direction and how many clicks it would move on the maneuver tool.

If I was captaining a freighter and a starship battle kicked off I would instantly come about so that my thrusters were pointing at the nearest battler and hit the throttles to the stops!

Get as much distance between me and them!

Now, robotically piloted or autopiloted freighters, they'd probably just chugging on at speed 1 or 2 oblivious unless collision sensors detected something straight ahead on which case they'd try to turn to miss it before coming back to the original heading.

I'll admit that I've been tempted to mock up a few bulk transports and even use the R&V freighters with no anti-ship and 1/2 anti-squadron battery as 'civilian models'. Then use a GW 'scatter die' to set their initial position (hit as stationary) then have them try to pull away the closest combatant within distance 5 just to create a bit of traffic and obstructions. Maybe start a 'civvy stampede' or the likes. Would be neat to have a full fledged system for them though.

Anyway, back to the custom-prints, yeah... worth it. I still feel awkward about putting them on the group painting forum so I keep them mostly to my thread, but they've been indispensable: Nebulon B2's or Arquitens for GSD's (I hate greatly dislike the GSD model), that Mc80a 'Wingless Liberty' is a gorgeous centrepiece that gets a lot of attention at tournaments (in terms of getting shot at and stared at), as well as unique fighters like Tie Defenders and Tie Avengers to replace the Tie Advanced. They are seriously wonderful models, and it's not like it's losing FFG any money from me as I buy everything I replace anyway, if just for the critical 'to play' components.

Realistically some of these things may come out from FFG in time, and I'll rebuy them then, but others are all but forgotten in the mists of time. Having a chance to own a representation of some childhood favourites that captured my imagination is just a sweet nostalgia trip all its own. After all, meld that with a bit of creativity and it makes for a great gaming experience.

Material wise, I've worked with all of them now: the Frosted Ultra Detail is great and my preference so far, but the Extreme detail did do a few things a little better on some small complex components. (It's extremely pricy, but there does seem to be a bit of a difference to me). The 'strong flexible' type, eeeh, not so much though with a few organic sculpts (and adding a self settling varnish) can make them perfectly serviceable. I'm very excited to see what this new High Definition Acrylate is going to be like Wonder when that'll be open to the public as I've already got plans.

-sighs- I would so dearly love an Mc40a.

Muahahaha!

Old thread
I raise you from the dead!!

Because I ordered some ships from Shapeways. I'm getting antsy for them to come in, and would like to mention it, but didn't think it deserved an entire new thread.

Anyway, they've been 'processing' for quite some time now. Any idea how good that 12/15 date is that they're supposed to ship by?

Once things go to In Production it usually doesn't take more than a couple days. That said it is the Holidays so probably a better chance of delays this time of year.

Did you place your order around November 27th-Cyber Monday? I placed an order about as large as you, (two AF MkI's, four DP-20's, two NR Raiders) and got an e-mail later that week asking if they could delay producing my order till after Christmas b/c it was a 'large volume' order. The reason was they got slammed with orders 'of Christmas gifts' and wanted to get them out in time.

I placed it a little afterwards - the 30th.

Incidentally, they all went straight to 'in production' today. It sounds like Lord Vader went to Shapeways to put them back on schedule!
