Flying Monster Movement

By Svartnatt, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Just got the game, and tried out my first solo play last night. Had a good time, I think I'm going to like this one!

I have one question about flying monster movement. After a flyer moves to the sky, its next move will be to ANY street area that contains an investigator, but only when it's symbol appears in the movement box of a mythos card, regardless of color, correct?

In other words, after a flying monster has moved to the sky, it can only swoop down on an investigator if one of them ends his movement in a street area, and only when it's symbol shows on a mythos card, ignoring color (because it's a flyer).

So investigators will be safe from any and all flyers if they always end their movement in locations rather than streets? Sort of taking shelter from the predators in the sky, as it were?

Right. Like all other monsters, flying monsters only move when their symbol comes up. Since color is only used for Black and Red (fast) movement, it does not matter what color the movement is.

Again, correct. Staying out of the street keeps you out of the danger of flying monsters. However, this may accelerate the Outskirts if the Sky gets too full. Also remember that a flying monster first checks to see if there is an investigator in an adjacent street to move to. It only moves to the sky if there isn't one.

Many of the expansions made it harder to hide from flying monsters and also easier to lure them down if you want or need to fight them (because of the Outskirts issue). Some examples include Gate Bursts, which move flying monsters regardless of symbol, Mythos cards that allow flyers into some locations, and the Flare gun, which moves all monsters that are in the sky into your street.

Thank you Tibs for the quick and thorough reply!

Will probably get Dunwich Horror as my first expansion soon, once I get a handle on the basic rules.

They'll be safe from flyers and most other monsters, too. Hounds of Tyndalos are the only monsters I'm familiar with that can get at an investigator in a location (barring gate activity.) Mind you, that doesn't mean investigators in locations are always going to be safe. Encounters sport their own dangers and sometimes that includes kicking an investigator out on his ass, moving him to the streets whether he wants to or not. If everyone playing makes a point of staying indoors, then the first person to get shown the door during the encounter phase will have a whole mess of trouble swarming down on him ;)

Stealthy monsters (violet border) can also enter unstable locations. Aquatic monsters can enter aquatic locations. I think there's another monster that can enter locations (hunting horror?). There's probably others. Certain encounters will also make monsters appear or move to your locations. Curse of the Dark Pharaoh has an interesting mythos card where you encounter monsters coming from your gate trophies - these might even end up in the hospital or asylum! demonio.gif

Those are stalkers, I believe. Also, in IH, flying monsters can enter the Devils Reef location. Which stinks, because I seem to have investigators stuck there waiting for rides quite a bit.
