Nos the Commoner

By Nostromo, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

Ok, created my first PC tonight. Fantastically easy...and oozing with theme.

I forgot the 3 i drew but settled on the commoner to 'test' the new system. Observations:

1) Total time : 5 minutes on character creation (after reading character creation rules chapter twice). Rules pretty clear but as others notes you do need to reference different chapters but that is standard stuff. Overall, slick.

2) Nos the commoner is a humble farmer and has no formal weapons skill or ballistics training. I kept some creation points aside to buy extra action cards and picked up the shield bash (toughness), grapple (athletics i think) and strike mighty blow (atletics). But my point is WOW i totally feel that this guy has back story. There were some neat sounding 'actions' for my character to do coming from a humble little farming/fishing village that were NOT weapons based. At first i thought there wasn't going to be anything 'good' for me to find but i was happy with the overall outcome.

2a) that being said the system is flexible that i can still use the basic Melee Strike without 'formal' traiining since all basic skills can be used by everyone. If i understand the system then that is pretty neat.

3) I have read the career advancement chapter, probably 2 times now going on 3...and...i....just...don't...get....it....still. So, i must be fried or the writing is poor. I will revisit this tomorrow.

4) Dissappointed that the example adventure does not use the 'act' rally 'episode' model since the Tome of adventure focuses on that primarily. In fact, breezed through the adventure and it doesn't sound 'fun' but definately not tried it. Seems more investigative and i was hoping the first adventure would be a little more cinematic...just my 10 cents.

5) Havent even looked at the spell books yet...overall this is looking pretty good. But yes VERY abstract on the combat front but can see how you can build it more tactical if need be. Going to re read combat and Tome book to see the extent.

What are other thinking, how is your first PC generation going?

Nos, I couldn't agree more with you regarding the ease of character generation...but the difficulty of understanding some of the actual gameplay mechanics.

I started a thread yesterday titled, "I miss Clem Shirestock!". I hoped that someone could help me understand why FFG didn't include better examples, save the Elven one that tries to summarize everything, but simply falls short in my opinion.

Clem was the name of the example PC in 1st edition. Silly as he was, it really helped someone new to WFRP.

The good news, I think, is that 3e is actually a very promising game...if I just could find a way to wrap my thick head around all of the mechanics.

Yes, quick chargen. I did not find the rules explanation (any of them) to be very easy to understand and there was a sore lack of examples. I hate to say it, but the writing isn't all that great for an instruction manual.

We'll see after we've got more people to "teach" the rules.
