I'm planning an adventure that's going to involve a large car chase within Scintilla. I was wondering, is there space anywhere for aircraft to fly inside hives instead of outside. I was planning to have some Imperial air assets involved in the chase but now that I think abou it they'd probably hit the ceiling or something.
Aircraft within Hive Cities
I assure you, the ceiling would be high enough to allow grav-car chases in between buildings (like the car-chase in the movie "the fifth element").
Alright, I better be a bit more clear.
Is there any way you could fit a Guncutter in there? If I can, I'd like them to be in one above the action and they'll be rappelling in with some Chaliced Commisariat Operatives once they can corner the persons of interest, but that requires a great deal of distance between the 'cutter and the road or they'll be hitting stuff all over the place, to say nothing of the RPGs I plan to give some of the baddies.

A guncutter would be more difficult. Most of them are larger than modern high altitued bomber planes. Why not use a Valkyrie instead? It would fit the "troop-carrier/gunship chopper" image you seem to go for. Those would certainly be able to navigate the inside of a hive city (although with certain limitations depending on which level they are flying in of course)
A valkyrie sounds good! Anyways, since it's the Chaliced Commisariat it makes perfect sense that they'd strong arm the local authorities into providing them one. More sense than having a 'cutter, anyways.
As I remember Scintilla's atmosphere is breathable. So the hive isn't enclosed. It's also a lot more spawling than the typical image of a towering hive spire. I tend to think of it in terms of the ep 2-3 starwars, and the 5th element in look.
It really depends which hive you're talking about. I think Gunmetal City would be fairly enclosed due to its function and position. Sebillus is the sprawling one and, in the upper reaches seems to be fairly open (bridges fro it's spires to the Lucid Palace are mentioned, etc) while it's mid-hive is fairly enclosed having been predomantly built from fallen palace rooms, but with monsterously huge hall-streets (not big enough for a guncutter, but smaller air craft and speeder-carages. Tarsus isn't completely sealed off (there's mentions of the scorching sun beams plaguing mid-hive), but it is tall and cramped with most trafic moving in a verticle direction so a lot of interesting maneuvers there, and Ambulon (sp?) isn't enclosed at all and would make for a truly interesting dogfight city... not only must you navigate between the buildings, but you have to do it while the city is on the move!
from france
just a quick answer from my ill bed. it ain't possibible in ambulon. nor in any enclosed space.
An Acolytes day is not complete without some dangerous rappelling over dangerous terrain...
(I once had mine rappel onto the top of a Gargant)
In a Hive like Sibellus, which I think its stated is about as big as a continent, there will be plenty of room for aerial vehicles to zip around.

Innocence Proves Nothing has discriptions of Flights in and arround Hive Sibellius and Tarsus
Hive Sibelius is covered with towers and has lots of air traffic between and around them [except near the Tricorn which tends to shoot non Inquisitorial craft down.
] Watch out for Clear Air Turbulance caused by the waste heat from Manufactuory districts. It also has external surface roads.
Hive Tarsus is a giant latticework structure in the middle of a desert and keeps the landing pads and roads on the inner segments rather than the outer ones which are excessively warm. Unusually for a Hive the Aristo's live near the bottom at the centre of the hive where it is coolest.
Good point. It seems that many of the roads would go between spires outside of the hive and through them so your chase could go in and out of the hive anyway.
In our last session a Gun-Cutter made swiss cheese out of a chapel on Ambulon. Still, I doubt it fit into the narrower mid-hive parts of Hive Sibellus or Hive Tarsus. You could use an Arvus Lighter ( picture here ) as it seems to be a little smaller than an Aquila Lander or a Gun-Cutter (Enormous instesd of Massive according to the DS Apocrypha) and so could probably descend further into the inner hive. A few shots that should give some idea what I think Hive Sibelius looks like [From the second Ghost in the Shell movie]
I think a Guncutter could fit between the spires in Hive Scintilla. Piloting it would probably be hell, though. I'd personally take the Valkyrie, since the extra firepower of a Guncutter is no use if you can't turn it around fast enough to actually aim...
