Sorry to post a Vague question but I was looking to buy the game when my friend chimed in with a warning... his words were "In the previous editions advancement was by chance" e.g. it was random what Upgrades you got as you progressed, is this the case with the new edition

Has this been adressed in the latest version? (and if someone has the time, could they take the time to explain the general method of advancement to this curious idiot )

That wasn't the case in old editions, and it's not the case in this one. To my knowledge there are no random elements to advancing (in any edition of Warhammer). You choose what you want to advance from a variety of categories based on the career you've chosen.
