Dark Heresy and Rogue Trader: differences in weapon stats

By The Laughing God, in Dark Heresy

I have compared the weapon stats from Dark Heresy to those in Rogue Trader, and was surprised to find a lot of changes. Some weapons have higher (and for the power sword lower) Penetration, Damage has changed, bolt guns get Full Auto, and more, for a lot of weapons.

I was wondering: you reckon these changes should be considered a kind of Errata, or are they just changed to accomodate the higher power level of characters (and their adversaries) in RT?

My understanding is that the differences are justified by them being different "patterns" of the same weapon type. Just like an AK47 and a M16 might both be classed as 40K autoguns, their differences could be represented by slightly different stats.

That said, I'm tempted to adopt at least some of the RT rules as a new standard, especially for plasma weapons.

For sure not an ERRATA. As Lucius already said "different pattern; different stats".

Aha but why come up with different patterns of guns and blades and other shooties? They must have felt that it was better to have these stats and came up with the patterns as an explanation for it. This way they did not have to Errata the original weapons in DH.

Well, I might have agreed with you on that point if the differences were only "slightly" different. But many of the changes are so radically different that it leads me to either two concluscions: either they have simply been "scaled up" to accomodate a higher power level in play, or they are intended as a form of errata.

Personally I never quite got why bolters always had to be semi-auto weapons in Dark Heresy. Plenty of characters (non-astartes characters) fire their bolters on full auto in many sources of the fluff, but for some reason, all bolters in DH were only capable of semi-auto fire.

I can see why the bolt pistol might only be capable of semi-auto fire, but bolters have always been these huge slabs of metal that would absorb most of any potential bone breaking recoil just by weighing a lot.

So in my games in DH, bolters will from now on be able to fire on full auto, just like in Rogue Trader.

Oh, I agree. The new stats are probably the "better" one from FFGs pov and the "different patterns" are just an excuse for both to exist in the same settings.

Frankly, I would not be at all surprised if Dark Heresy 2nd ed borrows heavily from Rogue Trader in certain places, weapon stats among them. (Not that I've heard even a suggestion of DH 2e, but I feel pretty confident in believing that we'll see one someday.)

Hopefully with Character Generation overhaul!

Now, let's not hijack the thread... though I've been tempted to start a thread on "what would you like DH 2e to look like" for weeks now.

Why having a book full of other guns (Inquisitors Handbook) when every common gun is already covered in the core rules?

a) That´s one of the thing that makes a company sell new books
since
b) That is what a lot of gamers want: more options (gun; character; whatever)

It might say that FFG was not happy with the rules they adapted from BlackIndustries and did not want to ERRATA things AGAIN.

But as well, they simply do what RPG-Developers due: feed new things to the customers and make money with it.

I belong to those who believe in the second.
