Not the MMO we were hoping for..

By Velvetears, in Dark Heresy

Sadly, it's just SpessMerhreeeeeens, but still, its already gone through one company before being passed back to GW/Relic cos it was to much work to handle and the company couldnt deliver.

Now all we need is for FFG/GW to get on the sci-fi MMO bandwagon along with Startrek, Starwars, Anarchy, Starcraft :)

The trailer was _exactly_ what I expected it to be when you wrote "spessmehreens" :-) Hmm "action RPG". That usually means that me and in best case my squadmates will have names and gain some sort of xp that I can spend to increase one of maybe three stats (shooting, melee and armor). Bet case it will be skill trees like Diablo II. I don't really expect a game where I get to make in character decisions and have any significant effect on the story.

In all honesty I expect a very linear shooter game with moderate quality gameplay, shallow AI, a squad that is less useful than in Operation Flashpoint 2, and lots of pretentious bombastic oneliners produced in a deep deep voice [cross ref: little tortilla boy]. It will however have huge music and expensive graphics that looks awesome on posters. I think this is a game that I will play only because it is set in the 40k universe and because the boltgun makes a deep satisfying THUDD when fired. I do however hope that there will be more to this game, and I hope I'm just old and cynikal, rather than old and wise..

BTW, anyone remember Fire Warrior for the PS2? It had an awesome soundeffect for boltguns. This can't turn out much worse.

Thought for the day: Hope is the first step on the path to dispair.

under the link for the 40k eventually online game.

Except it's not. It's an action game (with similar 'RPG elements' to Dawn of War II; no pretensions of being an RPG, just the inclusion of an upgrade system) being released for consoles. At no point has it ever been advertised as "The 40k MMO".

They have not said specifically that Spacemarine is THE 40k MMO, it is the only game in cross development and scheduled for release in 2010, month unspecified as also verified by XBox Official magazine this month.

It should be available on the majrity of consoles as an MMO, however THQ may be working on more than one 40k game at a time, especially given the problems had by WAR.

They mention in the article that the game will be similar to DoW in some aspects.

But best go read that article.

That said, Space Marine does look pretty spiffy for a night with the guys, beer an xbox and stuff. As for the MMO there is one coming , THQ has stated this several times, google it and you will find the press release ect, but its probably years away. My only hope is that its not gonna be like "LF Tank for Space Hulk, must have Terminator armour" or "WTB Stormbolter of the Monkey".

The smeg?

No. Space Marine is not the 40K MMO D<

:) what i said in the title

Nope. Because Warhammer 40000 MMORPG is planned to be released in 2012.

"Space Marine" and "Warhammer 40000 MMORPG" are two different games in development.

Still, I have to say that i look forward to Space Marine a lot more than any WH40K MMO. Now some of you who have read my earlier posts might go:

-"But Varnias!? Are you going hypocritical on us here? Haven't you often said that you dislike the extreme SM-fanboyism, and even go so far as to say that you don't really look forward to Fantasy Flight Games' "Deathwatch" title at all?. What's the deal here you shifty person you!?"

Well, you observant fellows you, the thing is while I might think it's counter-productive for the hobby that GW are riding the fanboy wave of Space Marines a little too much for comfort, I don't really have any problems with Space Marines as a concept. And im also adamant in my position that im not sold on the idea of a table top RPG about Space Marine characters, mainly because if that game were to follow the fluff correctlty, then the game would mostly just be about dice-rolling related to combat and little else. Let's just say that extreme amounts of dice-rolling don't really get my juices flowing if you catch my drift.

That said, Space Marines work extremely well as video game characters in the action genre, and I expect that the upcoming title will kick the ass of games like Gears of War. (A game which I like, but always tend to fantizise that im a space marine from 40K in while im playing rather than the overly-macho, meathead "Whatshisname" Phoenix)

As for a WH40K MMORPG, well im not too optimistic. Because my idea of a fun and interesting MMORPG just doesn't seem to have formed in the heads of game developers yet. For instance, I want games that focus a little more on the "ROLEPLAYING" of the word "RPG" rather than the "GAME"-part.

Pretty much all conventional MMORPG's just focus on the gaming aspect, and it's more like a bunch of tactical hack-and-slash games, and the players rarely ever actually go to any lengths to roleplay their characters in-game.

I want an MMO that pretty much force the player to immerse him/herself in the game world and the character, and thus create a mutual effort with other players to solidify that world, rather than the constant breaking of the fourth wall that we have now.

Somehow I get the feeling that any potential WH40K MMO, just won't be created with these ideas in mind, and thus im not feeling too optimistic...

the Space Marines have always been the main thrust of GW since its 2nd gen 40K line. no material has been as heavily produced or catered to as much as the Space Marines, I don't think i'd call it 'riding the fanboy wave'.

that said, i will agree with the lack of RPG element in a Space Marine game that said, who knows what kinds of dimensions they have up their sleeve to bring it to light (IF we ever see it). I'd snag the book anyway if anything as a source supplement for DH and RT. but who knows, it may surprise.

ahhhh. RPG online 40K. i may be in that small minority that really doesnt care for these MMORPGs. and i would have little to no hope that one based on 40K would really be that much better. and i can only imagine all the whining and bellyaching about it by ppl complaining that THIS IS NOT CANON, AND THAT IS NOT CANON. AND IN THE BOOK SO AND SO AND ON PAGE 197, IT SAYS....the only ppl that may be happy with it are those that don't care about canon or those that know nothing about 40K.

I'm always up for ANY attempt at bringing 40K to life but the trouble is just how large, vast and varied the universe is in terms of denizens, cultural attitudes, technology, etc etc etc...the shooty aspects are all fine and well but the feel of it...very tough to pull off. I've seen enough licenses butchered by game developers, and enough GW ones massacred.

can it be done. yes. can it be done well...i reckon thats the thing innit?

Yeah, I read that article when it came out. I've known that a 40k MMO is in the works for a while now. This isn't it. The main reason being that it's a console action game with pseudo-RPG elements, not an MMO.

If Space Marine was the 40k MMO, something would have been said, an announcement would have been made stating the fact - MMOs are the kind of game that you can't skimp on clear advertising for. Nothing in the trailer (which I saw the full version of at Games Day UK this year) suggests an MMO.

THQ are a big company, with many divisions and subsidiaries. Vigil - who make MMOs - are working on the 40k MMO. Other elements of THQ like Relic are working on Dawn of War II expansions (Chaos Rising being the first one, revealed earlier this year), and Space Marine both. Working on several games at once is entirely within their ability, particularly as these three games represent only one licence they're currently working with, as demonstrated by this news article (which lists the 40k MMO as having a 2012 release; Space Marine isn't listed, but every source I can find suggests it'll be out early next year).

You're speculating a connection where there is none.
