Living Campaign?

By Crymoar, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

There was 'another game' that introduced the Living Campaaign concept when they released thier 3rd edition. It was a really, really neat idea and they implemented it well. It definitely made taking characters to gaming conventions a whole lot of fun. It adds a whole new diminesion to your gaming? Has there been any talk of implementing a living campaign for WFRP?

I may be miles off here, but are you talking about Star Wars?

D&D has a living campaign and it is quite interesting. Definitely adds to an overall whole story that could be going on.

I would be up for that. I introduced the idea at the end of 2e over at rpg.net, but all I got were a bunch of snotty responses from xenophobic basement gamers (like myself). To be brutally honest though: Considering that there is virtually no widespread convention support from players, GM's or the companies who've produced WFRP, it could be difficult and fall on the shoulders of a few hardened individuals. There are conventions out there who do include WFRP, but they are few and far between. I'm hoping the new edition will change that (even temporarily).

The main Living campaigns currently running at conventions are: Living FR and Pathfinder. There's a wiki out there that shows more, but these are the two that are currently supposedly widespread.

I think it would be cool, but it would take some effort:

a) Getting scenario "standards" - i.e. 4 hours play = 1xp; amount of loot standardized so you don't get some yakoff prancing around in full plate after his first advancement

b) some kind of sounding board/forum for community. Afterall, living play is about community :)

c) standardized char-building

d) getting more scenarios written (or be a parasite-game and allow play of all kinds of scenarios from WFRP1,2 or even other systems adapted to WFRP). The latter option is usually less work.

THoughts?

Yes it was D&D. While D&D was a flawed game they got the Living Greyhawk campaign right. The entire real world was ovelaid with Greyhawk and that determined your Character's home region. They introduced standaradized characger creation and you had to have a gm 'sign off' on each approved adventure you played. The form used kept up with your character's expericence, equipment, gold, and time units (you had 52 to spend each year per character). The RPGA organized the whole thing and did a really fabulous job.

They got rid of time units for 4th edition and the Liiving Forgotton Realms campaign which was a big mistake in my opinion.

I think a Living Old World campaing would be absolutely fantastic but it would take an organization like the RPGA to pull it off.

While I would dearly love to see something like this, having both participated in and helped run Living Forc e at various times, it's something that may be outside the abilities of FFG right now.

A living campaign is a huge undertaking, and I don't think they're currently staffed to support it.

However, this wouldn't prevent the fans from starting something...

Is the RPGA a D&D only organization?

THE RPGA is ran by Wizards of the Coast. As such the promote Star Wars and DnD.

They are now. During their glory days, some of the best Shadowrun and Call of Cthulhu I've ever played was through them.

Pathfinder Society is the equivalent for the only other significant "Living" group out there.

Does FFG have an official stance on a Living Campaign one way or the other or do we know for a fact that it would be just too much for them to bite off?

They don't even have a "players seeking players" forum...
