A few questions about psychic powers.

By Ryath, in Rogue Trader Rules Questions

On page 72 for the Astropath it states that the Astropath Transcendent begins play with the Astral Telepath technique and may pick two others from the Telepathic Discipline. Does this mean they can pick any of the other techniques in Telepathy no matter the XP cost as long as they meet any prerequisites for the power?

As you level an Astrophath up in ranks you can buy more Psychic Techniques at set XP level depentent on the rank you bought them in. You can then buy new powers as long as the XP you spent is the same or lest then the cost of the new power. Now does this mean you only can get two Psychic Techniques worth 100xp as you only get two in Rank 1 and 6 worth 200xp over ranks 2 to 4? I mainly just wonder about this cause if you pick up the Telekeinesis Discipline would you have to burn one of the 200xp psychic techniques to buy Force Bolt for 100xp? As you only get a max number of powers I just want to make sure I have this right.

If you push your Psy Rating by 3 for a power does the increased Psy Rating of 3 add an addition 15 to the Focus power test.

As far as I know, you start with two 100xp techniques. I can't remember where I read that, however.

Essentially, yes. You pick your effective Psy Rating before making the Focus Power Test, and use that value to determine both the bonus you get on that Focus Power Test, and the effects of the power itself. So, if you're Psy Rating 3, and choose to push for an extra 3, you've got an effective Psy Rating of 6 for that power, gaining a total of +30 on your Focus Power Test - 15 more than you'd have if you'd chosen not to push.

Are you sure? Page 157 has a similar statement to that on 72, and I don't see anything about 100 xp limit there either. I'd be interested if someone can dig it up because I don't recall that little tidbit.

You don't have to take two 100xp techniques, but many higher ones require previous techniques, so you're pretty much limited to the 100xp ones and maybe one or two 200.
