God-Emperor, have mercy ! This is one of the most overrused piece of music which was ever made xD Even eating breakfest with that music would be an epic but I would totally leave a session after hearing it on

LOL well I guess you could go with what used to be the most overused music before requim for a tower came out. The orffs carmina burana and holsts the planets. Fortuna and Mars respectively.
Peace I just do not like that song. Too many youtube clips have it, because people do not know any others "epic songs". It doesn't change a fact that it's not a bad piece of music.
Anyway, I would suggest to use some music from anime for example. Some anime have really an epic soundtrack, I'll give an example:

Even getting killed by a daemon would be kinda funny with this song playing
I wonder why this haven't show up yet It should be an Imperial Guard Assault Theme
But being serious - Starship Trooper OST is quite good as well. Especially from the first movie.
Get's his Excalibur on...
O Fortuna
velut luna
statu variabilis,
semper crescis
aut decrescis;
vita detestabilis
nunc obdurat
et tunc curat
ludo mentis aciem,
egestatem,
potestatem
dissolvit ut glaciem.
Sors immanis
et inanis,
rota tu volubilis,
status malus,
vana salus
semper dissolubilis,
obumbrata
et velata
michi quoque niteris;
nunc per ludum
dorsum nudum
fero tui sceleris.
Sors salutis
et virtutis
michi nunc contraria,
est affectus
et defectus
semper in angaria.
Hac in hora
sine mora
corde pulsum tangite
quod per sortem
sternit fortem,
mecum omnes plangite!
BTW: Salcor, I think that the band Gregorian also did a version of Nothing Else Matters on The Best of Mystera album. Disk 1, if I remember right.
Apocalyptica did a pretty awsome version of Unforgiven on their Mettalica for Four Cellos album...
I'm betting that the the other version of Unforgiven is a Gregorian cover, as well. It's really a band name, too, you know...

Because this is Rogue Trader, someone has to mention
I saw the thread, and immediately thought of Alestorm.
Well, after a good bit of hunting through my cd collection looking for the right sound for my RT game, I think I finally hit on a good mix of foreboding with a dash of epic that will fade into the background nicely: Midnight Syndicate (can't believe they haven't been suggested yet...). A mix from 13th Hour, The Dead Matter, Dungeons and Dragons, Realm of Shadows, Born of the Night, and a couple from Gates of Delirium for 3 hours of music seems to do the trick.
They have several MP3's from their albums for download on their site to give you an idea as to their sound, well worth looking into for some good background music for grimdark adventure ;-)
Edit: Hero's Valor is a good sample of some of their compositions that can be more swashbuckly in a dark kinda way. It's the best they have up for free, but, by and far, Beasts of the Borderlands and The Hunt are far more charged and epic sounding with City of Sails, the most up-beat composition I've heard from them, being the perfect theme music to open any RT game on. Most of the other compositions are great for finding mysterious ruins, space hulks floating out of nowhere, etc. They tend to have a strong feeling of suspense and otherworldliness to them which makes one think of finding hidden things not meant to be found fallowed by the exciting danger that finding such leads to.
After reading through this thread I feel like a big dingleberry. I usually listen to Basement Jaxx or some other upbeat cheesy sort of music like that. Royksopp or Daan. Or I just listen to something like Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Grieg, Wagner or Mussorgsky. My music is about as epic as going to the bathroom.
Edit: With a few exceptions from my classical list. Nobody can say that Mussorgsky's Night on Bald Mountain or Grieg's Peer Gynt isn't epic.
