Radical Explorers (RT/DH)

By HappyDaze, in Rogue Trader

I just picked up the Radical's Handbook for DH and I've been looking at how to convert some of it over for use in RT. Some parts are going to be smoother fits than others, and the first part that appeared 100% compatible is the Radical Origins.

Blighted Schola (Schola Progenium) - I like it, but I'm still not sure where to go with it in RT. Perhaps a Seneschal with a hidden past?

Darkholder (Void Born) - This is just what I was looking for to give a Renegade House Navigator an extra twist of naughty.

Hive Mutant (Hive World) - Nothing too interesting here. Just another way of getting to the Tainted (Mutant) effect from Lure of the Void, but the fact that it uses the (largely inferior) DH mutations prevents this one from being 100% compatible.

The Tainted Blood of Malfi (Noble Born) - Perfect for that Rogue Trader with a dark twist of corruption and insanity coupled with brilliance. Lots of fun to be had with this one.

Next I'm going to look at the Radical Background Packages to see which ones can be made into Origin Path options.

Blighted Schola also suffers from being an offshoot of Schola Progenium, something that would require yet another DH book to use. This isn't a problem for many players that buy both DH and RT stuff, but it's worth mentioning.

Still, I really like The Tainted Blood of Malfi and Darkholder as options for RT.

There are also a few interesting pieces of gear in here that could be taken as Acquisitions with GM approval.

hey happy give us some overview of the book! should we pick it up? i am currently on the fence since my shelf space is getting precious.

I've only had it for a day and my reading time has been split between Radical's Handbook and Mysteries of the Hollow Earth, so all i can offer is some very brief words.

I like it well enough, but my motivations for buying it are to use some of the material for RT rather than for DH. This means I was looking more for hereteks (for Explorators gone bad) and xenos than daemons and psykers, but the book seems far more weighted towards the latter set. I can't really complain - I'm not fully within the book's target audience - but the treatment seems to favor Hereticus- and Malleus-tainted over Xenos-tained character options, and I'll find those much more useful. I was also looking for some more xenos-tech that characters could pick-up as Acquisitions, and there's little of that and much more warp-tainted stuff that I don't really feel is too appropriate for RT characters.

If you're looking for a product to help pad your RT game, this is pretty expensive for what you get, but if you're a Dark Heresy player this is a must-hav.

I'm starting to wonder if these packages really are balanced for RT. Taking my first interest, The Tainted Blood of Malfi, you gain +10 Intelligence, Resistance (Fear), and Talented (Deceive) at the cost of 1d10 Corruption Points and 2d10 insanity Points along with the loss of the Noble Born's Etiquette feature. This still seems pretty **** strong (especially the +10 Intelligence) to me. Is it strange to anyone else that some of the DH options seem strong even in the context of RT?

I haven't read the book yet, but I'd presume part of the cost comes from following (and perhaps being known to follow) a Radical ideology, which would have serious repercussions (even for a RT rather than an Acolyte).

The alternate Home World Origins are not strictly for characters with Radical ideologies. Nature vs. nuture and all that...

The Radicals Handbook is exceptional. Mega-tonnes of info on the Inquisition. I highly recommend it.

The alternate career paths really create good DH characters for Rogue Trader usage. Many are so strange and heretical, they will work well with my RT campaign.
