Good guide. I'd like to add a warning: the Edit button dissapears if you move away from the topic for a little while. It might be triggered by logging out, by a timer or maybe by someone else writing a post after yours.

That's good to know. Thanks for sharing. happy.gif

The edit button dissapears 5 minutes after the post is created.

It'd be a nice function to be able to use whenever though.

The edit button for every post of yours in any particular thread disappears 5 minutes after you post in that thread.

So, to clarify, if you would like to edit a main post of a particular thread that you created more than 5 minutes ago, then if you post in that thread; the edit function for all posts of your own in that thread will be available again for 5 minutes.

Or use tabbed browsing. They can't make it go away if you never refresh your window ;-)

Or they agree that sex is not a topic to be discussed on a public, family, forum. Which is fair enough, to be honest. I'd have imagined that you shouldn't have posted it up a second time if they removed it once, that's just rude, IMHO.

That never stopped all the other topics discussing sexuality in the Imperium. We've had lengthy threads on homosexuality in the Imperium, whether the Sororitas have sex, whether the Space Marines are capable of it, what common sexual practices one would encounter would be, etc. Unless he got down right pornographic in his post (I never saw it) then I'm not too sure why they would have removed a thread talking about such things now but nt in all the other instances.

The second thread they removed was just his thread asking what happened to first and wondering why it was removed.

That is a very common moderator rule-of-thumb for discussion boards. "Do not post questions or whining about moderated posts" I do understand it saves a lot of worry and work for the moderators who does not have to argue about how they do their job. Remember, FFG pays for the servers and the connection. It is a gracious gift to us users that we are allowed to hang here.

As for talking about sexuality and relationships. There are perfectly good ways to talk about such subjects without making the discussion potentially offensive to parents of minors. Generally speaking: 7 year olds knows that grownups can be in love and therefore want to live together, and this has a potential to include children. So discussions around themes like "love" and "family" tends to be OK at all forums, indeed on rpg forums since love can be a very important motivator for plots and stories. Discussions about sexual acts tends to be much more questionable, descriptions of such is definitely out.

For a good example of handling grownup themes in language, read the short note about Slaneesh at DH page 240. The author uses very descriptive and inspirational language without becoming dirty or crude in a way that could upset a parent of a minor. Mind you, the person(s) that set the rules for this forum may demand even more restrictive standards than what they have in their books. The books can be restricted in who they are sold to, but an internet forum that is available to read for anyone that can handle a keyboard is another thing entirely. Handling language in such a subtle way is of course much easier if you are writing in your native tongue.

God, I sound like a fanboy. It's probably because I've been moderating on plenty of forums. :-)

Why can we have graphic descriptions of violent acts but there is no tolerance for describing sexual acts? Why is it acceptable to imagine and discuss doing horrible things to others in great detail but imagining and discussing non-violent and consensual sex acts is seen as a perversion?

Don't ask me why. I'm only talking about my experience of what moderators of "family-friendly" forums are told to strike down on. I agree wholeheartedly with you. Personally I'd much rather see my kids be inspired to have sex than be inspired to kill (wich is very rarely a consensual act btw). However I am not the one to set the rules for these forums. Neither do I control what is generally considered "family values". And I don't even wish to question the people setting the rules for the FFG forums. I'm pretty sure they have lawyers/attorneys and PR advisors that are very knowledgeable about what is acceptable behaviour for a company that wants a reputation that does not upset parents of minors.

I think it is not so much FFGs standards, but much more the general morality of our entire "western" society that should be questioned. And I think there are much more suitable boards to do that. So here on the FFG forums I can live with thinking twice before writing about "risque" subjects.
