How many heroes and how many mosters?
How many character stand-ups does the core set include?
There's one of each character type and one of each monster type.
As for plastic stands, I think there's 8.

But remember, you can always use warhammer models/proxy models/bits of paper with "Beastmen" written on them for the same effect - as the distances are abstract, there's no need for any particular bits of equipment for characters/NPCs
I'm increasingly inclined to use either models or dice to represent enemies. Dice could give a running total of wounds on the creature, giving quick visual reference to how damaged they are. You could also use differen sized dice to hint at how tough the creature is overall... or use that to manipulate PC percpetions.

Me too. Especially if there are several of a given monster. There is a cool site I found once that has blank plexi stands for putting in your own artwork adn they come in a variety of sizes. Not too bad on price either if you want something between using a mini and a scrap of paper.
A friend of mine who was getting into Mordheim used shrinky-dinks until he decided what army he wanted to go with. He found pictures online of various fantasy characters, then colored them by hand.
