Resetting the Timer: Squats!

By Jephkay, in Dark Heresy Gamemasters

I can't let the little guys go into that dark night. I think there are many who hated to see the stunties take the Long Walk. So these are some basic Squats for you to fill in details on. Drawn from the work of N0-1_H3r3's Something Other Than Human . Its a great resource and if you can get it, your players will love you for it! This uses the aforementioned document and the 1st and 2nd edition Squat army lists. Again, just a bare bones skill & gear outline. Some stats may be a bit high, but my players love a good scrap... YMMV

If you can get it? It's never stopped being available since the day Dark Heresy was released, and was recently updated to account for the release of Rogue Trader... it's available at my website, http://www.n01h3r3.com , along with my rules for the Tyranids, so you can re-enact the downfall of the Squat Homeworlds...

On a slightly less grumpy note, It should be pointed out that my rules for Squat PCs covers survivors of the near-extinction of their race - hence the inclusion of Hatred (Tyranids) - before the Tyranids descended upon the Homeworlds, there'd be no reason for them to have that talent (or the accompanying insanity that derives from being the survivor of a nearly-extinct people with a serious grudge).

Good overall, but equipment-wise and stat-wise, they seem a little lacklustre, which is odd for a race that prides itself on martial prowess and the quality of its wargear, and the elites and specialists further down the page don't seem to progress all that much from the basic warrior. Compare them against the Orks and Eldar in Creatures Anathema and Rogue Trader, and see how they fare - it might give you a few ideas on how to adjust them to be a little more appropriate in their equipment and ability.

Hearthguard

Armour: Exo-Armor (Power Armour) (AP 7, all locations)
Gear: Beer, Keys to the bike.
Threat Rating: Xenos Majoris

A little underwhelming, perhaps. The Power Axe in Rogue Trader is 1d10+7 E Damage, Pen 7, adding Strength Bonus on top of that. Assuming Exo-Armour (which was closer to Terminator Armour than Power Armour back in 2nd edition) grants +20 strength like Power Armour, Hearthguard would be dealing 1d10+12 damage. The armour would probably grant 10AP to all locations as well...

Warlord

The powerfist is again underwhelming - per the rules in The Inquisitor's Handbook and Rogue Trader, they deal 2d10+(2xSB) damage, which would be 2d10+8 in this case, with a Pen of 8 (or 9 in Rogue Trader, accounted for by being a different pattern).

Have a look at the Threat Ratings as well - it takes something really dangerous to warrant a Majoris rating...

Thanks for the reply. You are right, it's a bit (a bit?) sloppy. Essentially, I just threw it together to see what comments I'd get back before polishing them up for actual use as a mercenary resource. The higher level fellas are just there for grins.

I'll adjust my write ups and might post the final results.

As for the scarcity of the document, I wan't sure about anyone ever seeing it again with Dark Reign being axed (or something) by GW. I fear all the great stuff over there may disappear forever!

Might want to add a bit more in the way of talents and skills for the higher ranked Squats. I can't see any self respecting space-dwarf that bothers equipping power-axes, powerfists and such to not have any melee-talents. Plus Engineers have Tech Use at base?! Also fun to note: The old "Squat Engineer's Guild" army list was basically a bunch of dwarves on bikes and trikes and dressed like a cross between a Hell's Angels pack and an Imperial Guard unit. I would agree that the base stats are probably a bit on the high side. You can always slap a few advances on them for your own stories to reflect "veteran squat beerhall raiders" or somesuch... Crap, now I want to play DH at Oktoberfest! "Nurgle is headed for tha kegs, lads! Quick, save tha sausage!"

For those interested in fluffy goodness:

Squats considered the number 8 to be lucky, so standard squad size was 8 rather than the Imperial standard 10. Of course the fact that there were also Chaos-tainted "dark Squats" out there made this a rather suspicious fact given the icon used for "Chaos undevided".

Squats largely resembled Imperial Guard formations as far as gear and doctrine go, with the major exceptions being squad size (8), troopers being tech-savvy and the use of Rhinos rather than Chimera as transports. They also made use of "Thunderer Squads" that consisted of a Sergeant, two riflemen and five heavy bolters.

Living Ancestors should really be Seers. Adding in the Telekinesis is not a bad touch, since they were also somewhat useful in battle. Not much use in a fight the way a Primaris Battle Psyker or Space Marine Librarian is up close, but still not to be ignored. Think Grandpa-dwarf sitting in a chair wearing his robe, grumping about the "good old days", drinking beer and occasionally melting-face.
