Mounted combat

By Olin011, in WFRP Rules Questions

Hi Everybody,

This is my first post on this forum so few words about myself: I've started playing Warhammer 1 ed. in mid 90's when I was 12. For roughly another 10 years WFRP was the main system that I played. Then I had some break from RPG (studies, work, parties :D etc.). Bought the 2nd edition but played maybe 3 sessions because of lack of time, other pursuits and now I see the 3rd ed. is coming out. I read FFG announcements and demo reviews and I must admit this edition has caught my (growing) attention. So maybe this time I will buy it and find some time to actually play it...

Anyway, back to the topic - I couldn't find anything about mounted combat. Are there any special action cards connected with fighting from horseback ("mounted charge", "horse atack" for example)? Is it included in the core rules at all?

Is the riding an advanced skill or a talent? What are the penalities for riding a horse without the proper skill?

It would be great if anyone could shed SOME light on this topic.

PS: Apologies for my English - I'm not a native speaker.

I didn't see anything during my skim through of the rules at the demo. However, I would think, based on the structure of the system, that is would be relitively easy to deal with mounted combat. This may be addressed in further rules supplements with action cards, etc.... It would also be cool to see stress and fatigue for mounts in combat as well ( to show the fear and stress a mount deals with when involved in deadly combat).

Use the Perform A Stunt action card until then.

Ride is a basic skill, based upon Agility. It also combines Animal Handling, such as care for mounts and riding equipment.

Specializations for the ride skill are: Horsemanship, Trick Riding, Wagons, Mounted Combat, Long Distance Travel.

There are rules for lances.

Anything else would be covered by 'Perform a Stunt'.

And the sabre works as a specialist cavalry weapon.

It supprises me this wasnt covered given the sheer number of times that it was discussed in 2nd ed, in every one of its forum incarnations.

I don't have the rulebooks, but other people have mentioned that rules for lances are included, there's a cavalry specialist weapon group and mounted combat is covered as a specialisation.

So although there is (possibly) not a specific section on mounted combat, perhaps the rules on it are just scattered around the various sections to which those rules relate (skills, weapons, etc)

have you got the rulebook and are you saying the info in it is insufficient to run mounted combats? what's missing?

No, that's just it. It's covered.

There are no special rules for mounted combat. You can fight mounted like you can from the ground (with the associated bonuses for calvary weapons). If you do anything out of the ordinary, then you may have to make a ride or mounted combat test. Anything REALLY out of the ordinary, you use 'perform a stunt'.

There's no entry for a 'horse' yet, but I would suspect they add a soak or two and perhaps a defense dice to mounted combatants. That's the way I'll probably do it till a horse entry is released.

You might want to require at least a trained Ride skill to do it, but it's up to the GM.

Rules for mounted combat, movement, cost to purchase, cost to feed, cost to stable, encumberance, and any number of other specifics on mounts are NOT included - or at best are scattered through the rules.

Not a criticism - just the facts. There's only so much space for including things, and this is one thing that was left out. Based on everthing I've seen about the game this is not a matter of forgetting an aspect of the game, but a choice on what was needed versus space available.

I suspect we'll get more info on mounts and mounted combat in a future supplement that also has Knights.
