Do you play with normal House cards or with new ones in ACOK expansion?
Normal cards or new?
I use Clash. They're more dynamic and Ned isn't the strongest card you have with castles, making him kind of annoying to use since you sacrifice a good card no matter what.
We found the ACOK cards overpowering, allowing a single footman to defeat an army of 3 horsemen. When ASOS came out we used it's cards for everything.
I personally prefer the ACoK cards, as they add some meat to the combat for people who have played a lot of the base game.
That being said, if I am teaching a game that is comprised of mostly new players, I will probably use the original AGoT cards to get everyone used to the gameplay mechanics.
We found, that white player punishes yellow on sea if ACOK cards are used. How do you handle that?
As powerful as the ACoK cards are, they do seem more balanced overall when compared with the original ones. I haven't had the opportunity yet to play the base game with the ASoS cards though.
Me neither with ASOS cards, but this phenomenon may result from the more varying ACOK card- values. In the orginal game they were the same if you only count the combat strength values. Balancing resulted more from the other card features, which are more secondary in the case of sword/tower icons.
But this surely depends on the way (ATT/DEF) you use it and which House one plays. But everybody needs to win sometimes to win.
Our group prefers the original cards because it seems to keep the focus of the battles to what is on the board rather than what is in your hand. Generally, battles are all very close (with a few exceptions) so the powerful house cards in ACoK tend to overwhelm and sometimes decide a battle on their own. The original add some flavor and strategy. The ASoS are pretty good, power-wise they seem to fall right in the middle, the only thing they don't do is make any reference ot ships, but that's not always the end of the world.
The group I play with love the original cards, it keeps it simple and it gives all the attention on the board instead of guessing what your oppents have in their hands. Sure, there are players that love the randomness upturns in the new cards, but usually we try to keep it fair amongst our run throughs and keep it to just the power on the character cards.
Original cards with newbies, ASOS cards almost all other times, ACOK cards when I want to revel in weird and fun combos and interactions.
My group and I use the original house cards. I even made a set for the 3 other houses in the fan made 9 player feast for crows expansion. I also like the ASOS set as well. I don't care for the ACOK deck at all. Too unbalanced in my opinion( two 5's for Martell and none for Baratheon for example) I don't care for the "steal abilities" cards like PatchFace and Old Nan. Sometimes I have substituted one or more cards from the ACOK deck into the AGOT deck. For example sometimes we would use the ACOK Ser Jamie 5 card in place of the AGOT 3 card just to help Lannister a bit.
