Opinion of Specialist Pack Value

By EatSleepPharmacy, in Battlelore

I've played Battlelore base game several times, and have come to the conclusion that the goblins are inherently weaker than the dwarves and the extra 1-2 units the French get to compensate (as per the scripted scenarios) is not a full compensation! I can see that having the blue and red short sword units getting an extra move into battle can be used as a nice tactic, but that Goblin Run ruins my plans almost every game, even with supported units! Is this a fair assessment?

Do you generally see a higher goblin:dwarf ratio when using Call to Arms to compensate further?

I was walking through a game store the other week and picked up a copy of Goblin Skirmishers that was still on the shelf. I haven't opened it yet, but I just wanted the community's opinion about whether or not you think the goblin's need the help or not to balance the English.

Also, I've been hearing rumors of a possible collection of the dwarf and goblin specialist units into entire army packs for release in the future; is this something we should expect to see within the next year or two? If it is, would you suggest that I wait unitl then so I don't end up buying copies of units that I already have?

Thanks everyone for your time to help me!

I tend to go on and on about the value and virtues of the goblins in BattleLore - won't do so here (not in this post anyway ;) ), other than to say that the goblin versus dwarf clashes in this game are not one sided. Learning how to adapt to the goblin run takes more plays than "adapting" to the dwarves being of bold morale, but it can be useful instead of a constant penalty, if played accordingly. The darting nature of the goblin forces versus the constant pressing forth of the dwarves is but one of the clash of army-styles I am expecting from this game.

The additions to the goblin forces in the skirmisher and marauder packs are significant. The band being the most significant. Open it already ;)

I wouldn't hold my breath for any particular configuration of repackaging of what has already been released. I do expect Call to Arms decks specific to the dwarves, goblins, and humans to be released at some point, but I've no idea when, and if they will also be accompanied by units new or old.

Welcome aboard :)

Future surprises are in store for all who poke fun at the Goblin forces and believe the Dwarfs unbeatable. In the World of BattleLore, strength and weakness are only relative for brief moments and once you have discovered how to master a perceived weakness, only then will you achieve the status of a great and creative Commander.

"...master a perceived weaknes..." that's a turn of the phrase I was looking for :)

And as I have told some folks around here, there is some person in particular who lives in New York who gets chills about Goblins vs Dwarfs..namely after the browbeating he got 2 times when he was the dwarfs. So don't underestimate them...sure there are times/situations when goblins shouldn't attack dwarf units and is common sense (i.e. red dwarf unit on a hill as bold 2 vs green goblin unit going up hill...<G>)
