balance & customization

By VR*, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

i would like to descirbe my concept of the AGOT

i'm playing a two or three player game two times a week we have core set, four chapter packs and greyjoy starter.

frist about customization: we are palying with decks consisting of 50 cards

every deck has 24 characters, only the number of other cards are different but it's 1or 2 differential in events for example

we are trying to make the decks as similiar in construction as possible ( two bannerman, two heralds etc.)

every house has its default plots with one eception when we bought a greyjoy house we observe that the plot cards in this deck are to strong so we gave one military battle plot to stark, one intrigue gambit to lannister etc. after this exchange we achieved balance in game

balance: after many games with these decks i must say every house can win, maybe some are slighty better (lannister, greyjoy) but we've seen many diffrent stiuations on table and never had a domination of some particular house realy we've palyed two palyer games when one house ends with 2 or 1 power and in next match the situation was tottaly different

some cards have been banned by us in our game to achieve balance like war host of the north

we played couple of years in old good doom trooper with MAD customization of the decks and this wasa pursiut after the best cards

after we started AGOT we decided not to go the same path, for us the essence of the game is what you do with cards you got not i have better deck then you

every player knowes exactly what others have in theirs decks and some times by action made by your opponent you can tell what card he have in hand

its all about decisions during the game rather the how can i built my deck, we left exploits in customization behind us and...

the game in this concept is great...really

when we will buy seasons chapter packs before the game we will decide if we using seasons or not and customize the decks but with rectrictions in our concept so we will have two wariants of decks

im not sure if i will be properly understand what i was trying to say becouse my english is crap :)

so what are your thought about our form of play ???

Glad your enjoying the game. I think you demonstrate well the beauty of LCG. One core set amongst friends works fine. A situation like this that allows the game to grow, but remain 'Core-set-ish' and enjoable for a small group also works. The 'die-hard' CCG-ers get what they want without going broke. plus its very easy to enter the game.

My thoughts for you is as long as you and your friends enjoy the game that is all that matters. My thoughts personally are I wouldn't be too enthused about playing that way. A "balanced" deck where card types are matched etc. actually disadvantages certain Houses. No to mention that by banning cards you will rarely come to see the true depth of AGoT as you find ways of dealing with those problematic cards, you end up discovering whole new strategies and combos. Put it this way, War Host of the North is generally considered a crap card. Not only do most players not ban it, they don't put it in their decks relying instead on more efficient cards. I'm not sure you guys will ever find out why the card is dropped in favor of other cards.

All that said, if you guys really enjoy the game that is all that matters. Not my or anyone else's opinion of the manner in which you play.
