Changing Seasons ?

By Toqtamish, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

I have seen some cards that mention Winter and Summer. What I am wondering is how do you make it one season or another ?

The only way to change the season to Summer or Winter is with cards from the "Song of Summer" and "Winds of Winter" chapter packs (specifically, the Black Raven and White Raven cards).

Okay thank you, I wasn't sure how it was done and I couldn't seem to find the cards.

And if no one of that ravens come into play it's considered not winter and not summer?

And if one comes and later is killed?

Yep.

If it is discarded, then again, no winter / summer.

Ok, thank you!!! I searched the rules of that but didn't find them.

You won't find any "rules" on Summer or Winter because they are entirely driven by card effects. Summer and Winter mean nothing unless there are cards in play that refer to them. It's pretty much the same thing as traits. You won't find anything in the rules saying what it means to be a Lord or a Direwolf because the traits don't mean anything in and of themselves - you need cards that refer to the traits.

Okay, since there are no rules for them (though there should be with all the questions regarding them), what if I have a White Raven in play, and my opponent has a Black Raven in play? Which season is it?

Second, it is both Winter and Summer at the same time. So all effects that say "if it is Winter" apply and all effects that say "if it is Summer" apply. Just like a card with both the Lord and the King trait is both a Lord and a King as far as card effects go. A card that has one of each kind of effect will have to resolve both. If there are true conflicts, the First Player decides the order - just like any other conflict.

See? You don't need rules specific to Winter and Summer. The normal rules deal with the situation (which is possible more likely with the Crowns than with the Ravens) just fine.

Just want to add you can also make it winter with the attachment Crown of Winter. It will only only make it Winter if there is not a Black Raven in play.

It is from the Stark (Kings of Winter) expansion so it may be easier to get a hold of than the ravens. Of course, the chapter packs with the ravens have a lot of other cards that interact with the winter/summer keyword.

Okay, thank you, I didn't realize it could be both at the same time. I've never actually had that board, but since the question hadn't been plainly answered I just wanted to throw it out there both for myself and anyone else who searched near this entire discussion board with no satisfying answer.

Thanks again for responding. I appreciate it.

I am pretty sure that KTOM was just giving an example of what would happen if (some how) both ravens were in play at the same time. I can't think of a scenario where this could happen with the current cards we have available. I think you would have to give the raven in play immunity to attachments, with some card that has the raven trait. I could be wrong about that.

Anyway, when you play a black or white raven, any other black or white raven in play is discarded. They are attachments with the creature trait and are immune to non raven cards.

White Raven - Attach White Raven to your House card and discard all other Raven attachments from play. It is Winter. Each player takes 1 less gold token when he or she counts income.

Black Raven - Attach Black Raven to your House card and discard all other Raven attachments from play. It is Summer. Each player takes 1 additional gold token when he or she counts income.

It cannot happen with the Raven attachments in the LCG because of the way the Ravens work on each other. It can happen with the Crowns.

Is there a crown of summer???

Nevermind, I found it. Doh!

Crown of Azor Ahai

My point had less to do with the Ravens and more about which season it is considered if both seasons were stated to be in play. I used the ravens more as an example than as an indicator that you could have both ravens in play.

Either way, I do appreciate the response. Knowing that it could be both seasons at the same time if the right cards were on the board helped my knowledge greatly.

By the way, might I ask anyone who is reading this and has the time in knowledge to check out Stark Weenie and Targaryen Burn-Control in 4. AGoT Deck Construction? I'm still new, and only own the Core Set as of right now, and am looking for as much help and advice on how to build said decks as I can.

Thank you again.

I'm hoping to see a real crown of summer in a later chapterpack or in the Targ box. Azor Ahai lets you make it whatever season you want, not exactly the same mechanics involved as Crown of Winter. If someone can steal control of your Azor Ahai they can do whatever they want with seasons until a raven comes out.
