Sinophia / Sinophia Magna?

By Varnias Tybalt, in Dark Heresy

Im trying to gather as much canon information about Sinophia for a scenario im writing. Not that I would shy away from inventing stuff on my own (and I'll probably have to do that to fill in some gaps), but I would like to stay as faithful to the current revealed details about Sinophia as possible and try to work with that, though there is some confusion.

In some pieces of text, the world in question seem to be called Sinophia. In others, the name "Sinophia Magna" is mentioned pretty often. Now from what I've read, the Sinophia system is not made up of several inhabited planets, it's just the one. Would it be safe to assume that the name "Sinophia Magna" refers to the main capital/settlement of the world in question, or is the epithet "Magna" refering to something else?

Also, if you can think of specific pages in the Dark Heresy sourcebooks that mention something about Sinophia, be sure to post them so I can look it up. So far I've read about it in the "Calixian Homeworlds" section in Inquisitors Handbook, adn a little abou the tech witches in Creatures Anathema, and some about it in Disciples of the Dark Gods (a town called "Harrow Ridge" in the section about the "Murder room").

It can be quite the task to hunt down all these snippets of information about particular things in the setting. Perhaps one day we might be having a comperhensive encyklopedia or something along those lines. Oh well, a man can dream. happy.gif

Thanks on beforehand for your time and help.

I had always just assumed some writers somewhere had gotten Sinophia mixed up with Ganf Magna.

As for other bits, there's the Sinophian Wormthing in CA which might have a bit more elements to glean about the planet it's self. Also, in DotDG, in the letters and transcripts pertaining to the Tyrant Star, one of the reports takes place on Sinophia (the merchant and his man-servant who whiteness it's rise and go mad), and it features heavily in Calixian history so be sure to check up on it in the Calixian Timeline. There are several entries there.

oh yeah, I found those fluff texts as well, but I had no idea of the Calixian timeline. That one is in the rulebook right?

Dear God's man! How have you not went over the timeline yet?! It is the single most informative bit of dry reading about the Calixis sector out there. It's why i started incorporating the Haarlock line into my game long before DotDG came out and it's been great seeing the little nuggets and mentionings of cults and events in it get fleshed out in the supplements that have come out (though the Vile Savants went in a most unexpected way in comparisons to what i was imagining after reading the timeline).

Either way, no, it's not in the rulebook, but it is on the support page. You can nab it HERE .

It's got a bit more information on when Sinophia was founded, it's glory days, who founded it, when it all went wrong for Sinophia, etc.

Yup the Calixian Timeline is a must read, even before reading of the core book, almost.

Oh I remember having skimmed through it once or twice, but usually I can't be bothered to go online to check these things out each time so I usually stick with the books, and because of that I might have forgotten about this particular resource.

Anyway, it's useful to be reminded again. Im certainly gonna check it out. Thanks! happy.gif

If you have the CA, check out the Section about the "Tech-Witches of Amenicus Tole" or whatever his name was happy.gif

As far as I remember (no book at hand, sorry!) the tech-heresy described there is centered on Sinophia . If so, you get quiet a good picture from the fluff text to what state of decay every day life in the streets have broken down to. It reminded me of old Rome, but with the techno-arcane mixed into it.

Sinophia Magna is the planetary capital of Sinophia. Hope that clears things up. :)

Ah, just as I thought then, but it was hard to be completely sure.

That really clears up things for me, thanks! happy.gif

I've got nothing to add, but I do have something to link.

Some very well done art of Sinophia Magna for the 2nd part of the Haarlock Legacy.

Wait, what? Sinophia's gonna be in the 2nd part of the Haarlock trilogy?

Aww, now the pressure just got ramped up. Im gonna have to invent a rather obscure "part of town" so it won't clash with the upcoming stuff.

Nice pictures though. Reminds me of my favourite swedish PRG called Noir, but with a bit more Imperial iconography of course. happy.gif

I've used Sinophia as a centerpiece for a series of missions so far, so I spent a good deal of time salvaging official information. Unfortunately, there isn't a lot out there, save for the offhand mention of recent heresies and such, so I ended up having to make up most of it myself.

Turned out pretty good, so that was just fine with me. :)

Will be interesting to see an official take on the world, if the rumours about the Haarlock v. II is true.

Edit: As a side note, I modelled my view of Sinophia Magna on Venice rather than Prague. Love the atmosphere in the linked image though.

The link to the image doesn't seem to work for me and when I manually go to the artist's gallery it's also not there. Has it been removed?

Looks like the image was taken down. I reckon FFG didn't want the image going public before the book was produced.
